Any one have a AC Cobra

i have to say, the cobra has always struck me as possibly the most uncomfortable vehicle in existence, also like an old toothless english bulldog - all bark & no bite

I doubt that. Anything that weights about a ton with a 7L 380kW motor must have some poke to it.

Just a bit...

I've watched some guy go up Francois Rd in Durbs when the road was slightly damp, and he lit the tyres up in every gear even though he was being gentle with the throttle...

i have to admit, i see plenty of them around my neck of the woods racing from traffic light to traffic light with a great deal of noise & fanfare, but very few zipping along the freeways at "noteworthy" speed.

They are capable of 300km/h so the potential to go fast is there.

They're horrendous at high speed. Aerodynamics are non existent. Driving a cobra fast is like throwing a hammer at a wall. It's gonna hit, you just don't know which end will hit first.

Just go the the place that builds them in Cape Town and test drive one.

Better yet rent one for the day, it's not too pricey.

Knowing what a handful these are to drive (my boss has one) there's no way anyone is going to trust a random with it.

Focus please guys. AC cobra. (BMW suspension.) auto/manual does not matter. I want to feel the seating, comfort levels, Fatique factors, Stiffness of suspension, Handling, Steering, and feasability of the car.

Not too much to ask. I hope

No two of those kit cars will be the same as they are sourced from different parts at different times.

Sometimes a Supra gearbox sometimes a Cressida.

Suspension sometimes from an M3 sometimes from a regular 3-series etc.

Seriously just go to the builders in Cape Town and you'll get all the information and details you could possibly want.

They also have an unbelievable warranty...which you need since they do break down all the time.

ROFLMAO. Very true. I wanted an Daytona but suppliers are not willing to mold the body for me.

There are a few tricks you can master to decrease the Drag Coefficient by large percentages. Takes some work. But before I get into anything I would like to test drive a working Cobra. I DO NOT WANT A CAR THAT I HAVE TO REGRET DRIVING! I want fun relaxing and easy. The BMW suspension is supposed to do that unlike the old jaguar pipe frames.

The originals are very much a case of all bark and no bite, must like any muscle car of the era which will be raped by any hot hatch...possibly even by a standard Golf.

However the kit cars are a whole different story and all run modern V8's pushing some crazy power out.

It is a very interesting car to drive and the bigger the motor the more offset the pedals are making it a rather strange experience. Incredibly hard to drive hard, but a ****load of fun.

As was said already though aerodynamics are non existent. Doing 120 is a chore and pushing real speeds of 180 is actually quite a challenge, more than that I would never even consider as it will probably just throw itself off the road.

I have been lucky enough to drive one myself and be driven in it a bit as well. It's a marvellous experience every time but if I had to spend 350k to have one built I would probably have spent the money on something built in Germany in the modern era instead.

Im not Near Cape Town. More Rustenburg area. Also what breaks? The car is the car. Engine, Gearbox with all parts like starter Dizzy and carburator is not part of the car. I need a rolling chassis with complete body for my build. Engine and the like will be bulletproof.

The diff might be weak for conventional Cobra's but I am not ripping up the tar with 600 KW and 1000 NM torque.

Well I can tell you the one I've drive had suspension from a BMW M3 in (might have been M5 but not sure now) and it was infinitely easier on my kidneys than my own Golf 5 GTI.

The same owner just bought an RS4 and he says that is pure murder in comparison suspension and seating comfort wise.

But like I've already said, go to the source if you want to drive one.

I'm going to lie to you if I had to say exactly what has broken, but I know his car went back a number of times with engine related issues mostly due to fuelling problems of some nature or another.

Also had a manifold leak at one point from what I remember.

However after they found the initial problems and did some upgrades I haven't heard of any breakdowns in the last year since it was built about three years ago.

Gearbox was also replaced at some point because the original couldn't handle the torque.

I'm sure there must be a builder up there as well?

It's the nature of the beast since none of these cars are exactly the same and don't come off a Quality controller production line so there are bound to be a few niggles because of their hand built nature. But that's part of the fun at the end of the day.

If a Cobra kit car was as reliable as a german/japanese built econobox it wouldn't be any fun at all.

Great! :D

Now for your first lesson:

If a word starts with a vowel, a, e, i, o or , u then you must use "an" instead of "a".

Just to be more complicated sometimes if the word starts with an H followed by a vowel, you also use "an" - eg An Hotel.

I'm just bloody relieved that English is my first language, otherwise I would have had a hell of a job remembering all the rules! :p

Except if it's pronounced like it starts with a 'y', such as used and human :p

A cobra is not a daily driver, it is a once a week toy. Once you accept that, all is fine.

I went to phakisa with the cobra club. On the rainy sunday, none of the cobras' would venture out, in the rain(even with the great BMW suspension. Because they are near impossible to drive unless the conditions are perfect.

They were not faster around the track, considering the massive hp difference between the scoob and the cobra. But the newer cars corner much better, AWD greats the power down earlier on exit

RWD with that power, means you have to be very gentle on the throttle during application. Else you break traction and lose speed. Saw many going backwards.

Nice toy, just not a fast car in daily driving. Most have zero modern driver aids.

Crash safety on most replicas = zero stars. I kid you not.

It is mainly owned by VERY old guys, as that was picture was on their walls , when they were kids.

I understand Shelby is building a cobra with newer tech.

I see people talking about kit cars & AC Cobras in the same thread with builders in CT?

The only licensed AC Cobra (by Shelby) is made by Superformance in PE (previously Hi-Tech Automotive). They sell for US$60 000 upwards, second hand!

So which cars are you guys talking about?

I think they're talking about Kit Cars, rather than licensed versions.

Well then we should not compare apples to oranges. Those chassis Superformance build look pretty impressive, nothing like a garage assembled kit car.

Majority of Superformance stuff gets exported to the USA & Europe. They only have one dealer listed in SA based in JHB that also exports to the oil rich middle east countries, Future Classics, 16A Level 3, Michelangelo Towers Mall, Maude Street, Sandton, 2146, South Africa, Tel: 011 783 1563 / 071 687 8241

Most of the stuff SuperFormance makes is pretty shyte hot... they do work for Noble which makes some very impressive vehicles. I think they only do the body, but I can't be 100% sure.

Talking about the Noble or in general?

I know they make the body and chassis for a few of the cars they produce including the AC. The engine usually comes from a third party once shipped overseas, the AC gets a 427SRX from Roush for example but it's up to the buyer I think what engine he chooses.

I looked at their site a few years ago and in their gallery they had the chassis & body build process documented under their gallery, can't find it now.

Besides the Noble there's another supercar they do but I can't remember the name right now. They were also involved in that electric car from SA.
