Been using Player FM as my podcast app which is awesome with its web portal that allows easily adding/subscribing podcasts but it will only sync your subscriptions and Play Later list and that's it, doesn't remember which podcasts you've already listened to or play position etc.

Pocket Casts looks good and it's only R40 on android but last I checked their sync was very buggy, what's it like now?

With Pocketcasts if I add a new device can I just install the app, login and pickup exactly where I left off with all played and position data syncd over?

I use Pocket Casts on two devices (both Android) and syncing works fine. Just give it a few seconds and you should be able to continue where you left off on either device. I also use the website, when at work. Although the syncing on the web does not work every time; it will sync fine when you've finished a podcast, but not so good when in the middle of a podcast. But this problem is only between web and Android app. But from what I've read on the interwebs, the website is not their biggest priority.

All in all a very good podcast app. Also love their update notes when they update their app on Google Play

Also like the options to trim the silence in the podcasts (works really well) and adjust playback speed. I leave it on 1.2x playback; saves quite a bit of time :D

Main reason I want to get this app is for the cross device sync and backup of play position and status but it's appears for some users it either works flawlessly or virtually not at all?

Unfortunately hit and miss. I never had problems if synced between my Android devices. I was also lucky to only pay R10 when I bought it

I use Pocket Casts every day between Android and the web app. Never had a single issue, and sync is almost instantaneous. A second at the most. It's rock solid at remembering the position within the podcasts I'm listening to, and I've definitely never had issues pertaining to podcasts marked as listened to. No other podcasting services I've used comes close to the brilliance of Pocket Casts.

If you move to a new device does it remember all the played episodes and currently listening to episode play position for each subscription?

I've seen lots of reports that it'll only show the latest episode of a podcast as unplayed if you move to a new phone, no other info. That's the scenario I want to avoid.

No idea. I don't have a new device on hand. I've never noticed anything weird about how podcasts are marked though. I don't think it matters much, as you can just browse the feed of any playlist if you're looking for old stuff. I wouldn't notice or care whether or not they're marked as played because I'd know if I've listened to them before.

You can register an account on existing device, with username and password. When you get new device you just sign in with created username and password and it will sync. From then on it will sync automatically. That's how it worked for me anyway.

That's not answering the question though, the main reason I want to use the app is not to have any confusion over what I have or haven't played when getting a new phone, I have too many subscriptions to accurately know off-hand which I have already played, most use teh same album art for every single podcast, I'd have to play a little to get an idea of if I'd listened to it already. Some podcasts I have recently started listening to for example have 5yrs of old podcasts that I'm slowly playing through, would be such a pita if I loaded Pocket Casts on a new phone and it didn't sync the played status.

But after signing in on the new device will it sync and mark as played all previously played episodes and remember the current play position on any podcasts you are halfway through?

Yes. I had a Samsung S6 Edge and got the S8 this year. When I signed in on the S8 for the first time it downloaded all the podcasts which I have not finished, and jumped to the time where I stopped on the last podcast I listened. I think I probably synced podcasts on the S6 before I signed in on the S8 for the 1st time
