Hi all,

Just wanted to ask, besides speed of rotation,
What else is diffrent between a 2,5" 5400rpm drive and the same but 7200rpm?

Reason i ask is my laptop hdd drive is clicking,
Less than 2 months old, only 2 things i notice diffrent about it,

Its a slimline 2,5" and 5400rpm model,
But less than 2 months and already dead? Must be a new record.....

Is it worthwhile to simply ditch the slower drive and get a standard drive?

Get a SSD.

Cant go wrong, just make sure it's a 7mm SSD (from your OP seems like you have a 7mm drive)

You know tech works like that, nothing wrong with the type of drive, any number of things could have happened, maybe a bad batch.

Hard drives are especially unpredictable when it comes to reliability, you can buy two exact same drives and one will work forever until you replace it and the other die after a year.

+1

Actually had that case, 2 WD Blues. The one died within about four months, the other one is still running after 5 years.

I suppose your right, just thought its due to its design,
Slim size hdd in a laptop, why is that even nessasary?

As if the standard 2,5" isn't small enough,

Also, what's the deal with slower rotation? Is it a firmware thing, or is it built for some purpose?

Lower power consumption also I guess it safer to bump a drive rotating at a slower speed.

Nope, no real difference.

Currently running close to 100 Terabytes over about 35 drives.
Been swapping new ones in and out all along over the years.
I've seen all kinds of brands and types fail.

The thin design is for Ultrabooks, they are getting thinner and therefore require slimmer HDDs. Some are getting so thin they can't support an optical drive anymore due to it being too thick.
