Hi,

I did apply for DSL in the beginnig of July. Telkom indicated to me that the installation date would be in the first week of August.

Now I hear that it has been shifted to end September; although all the complience tests and port allocations have apparently been done. Went down to the Telkom branch, and they also can do nothing besides phoning the 0800 number.

Please, any tips on how to accelerate the installation process are greatly appreciated - I've had enough of dial-up and unreliable wifi.

you can try bugging them, phoning and emailing them everyday etc...
otherwise you gotta wait!

The quickest way to get dsl is to order 5 lines and cancel 4 when installation is due.

I have exactly the same problem with telkom. Ordered my DSL like 3 weeks ago. Was supposed to get an installation date from them last wednesday already, but every time i call i get the same answer "yes were aware of the problem, but let me e mail one of the managers and hell get back to you ASAP"

Im hoping the installation date will be a week or so from now, but I have a nasty feeling that it will end up being some time in august.

I dunno what the big fuss is about. They make it sound like theyre digging a ditch in the ground and installing the copper line from scracth. It took them a whole week to determine if I was the correct distance from the exchange - which I could do in like 5 min given the address of the exchange.

Sigh...all you can do is bug them every day, and be patient.

Speedy DSL Installation

I ordered my DSL beginning July and the installation was scheduled for 13 September. Last night Telkom phoned me and asked if they could come today as the contractors are in my area! Whoopeee...it's in! Maybe you should ask Telkom when the contractors will be in your area. I live in CT.

I ordered mine on the 12 May, they came last week Tuesday(19 Jul) and all they could say was that the line is faulty and the technicians will work on it, i called everyday, no one can tell me what is going on. :((

And then they say Cape Town is called the mother city because you have to wait 9 months for everything! ;-)
Although I'm happy with the soon installation, I must say that paying R404 for only 15 minutes of work is a rip-off!

if u know one of the dsl technicians that usaully fix the faults u can ask him to push the installation or u can bribe him with money then he'll install it on his day off...

it worked for me

I order my Adsl on 20th May.

Was told that there are no ports available and they will only be able to help me in august (early June).

I was then told on the 24th of June (application approved – line tested ok – port assigned) somebody will phone you to set a date for installation within the next 5 days.
When I did'nt recieve a call by the 11th of July I started the whole process of let me talk to a manager.
On the 13th of July I was told installation will occur on the 22nd of July.

True as bob the techie rocks up on the 22nd checks my place and says there is no cable to my house and he can't install the line and will do a Ism9 request or something.

The thing is when I heard there were no ports available I placed an order in early June for a normal phone line just to get basic Internet access. A month latter i get a letter from telkom explaining there is no cables near my place and they couldn’t help me till 2006.

Now the call centre is telling me ISM9(???) will take less than 2 weeks.
Now do I, keep believing the *** they spit out and phone them on a weekly basis or do I go get a wireless product (Iburst) that is also full of ***

Because of them saying they were coming on the 22nd I went out spent a grand on Netgear wireless modem. Signed up for adsl 10 gig account which now with activation fee and months notice will cost me a good 800rand. For nothing.

Yeah, but unfortunately Telkom refuses to give out the details of their techs..anyone know the tech in Stellenbosch? Whiskey is a'waiting

Yeah

Try phoning the business centre. Speak to a saleslady - tell her you are interested in a PABX blahdieblah. All seems lekker

"OK, but before I place my order, I have an outstanding issue. My Adsl line has been outstanding for ages now. If you can get that sorted out chop chop the order is yours. Remeber you are not the only guys in town that supply PABX's and I would like to see what kind of service Telkom can actually deliver when PRESSED."

Soon as the line is in ditch the witch.

You can struggle with Telkom, or you can use an ISP like saol.com to apply for your line on your behalf - with a direct contact in Telkom it is always going to be easier.

Quote from the website :

We will deal with Telkom on your behalf, ensuring that the installation of a new ADSL line at your premises goes as smoothly as possible.

Just make sure that you don't get a PABX company to "Speed things up" for ya.

One of my companies was without Connectivity for a week. Good service from A&D.
