hopefully heaven but probably hell
Performance in that area will probably be pretty lousy... but hey Sentech will deny everything until you get it and then you will just join the vast hordes of people with speed tickets. In fact you will probably find yoursefl coming to this forum more reguraly just to see if someone has discovered a glimmer of hope or something.

You can get a trial run though from Sentech. I thinks it 7 days or 14 days and they have to allow you this trial run because that is the law when it comes to services.

myWireless 128, 64, 48, 16 - depends on its mood.

I REPEAT, DO NOT GET SENTECH IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS BUSINESS MAN

Note my comment I left in the other thread about ripping your guts out and feeding it to my dog... If your business needs connectivity, depending on your business, there are a wide variety of RELIABLE telscum products out there...

I am not a supporter of sentech. This is an organisation that needs help, badly.

BUT.....I am reasonably happy with what I have got.....24 hour service...fixed price.....always available when I want....transfer large documents between home and the office....running an email server.......trading with live feeds......downloading with multi threading at good speeds ..average 10 Kbytes on sentech 128 package....piss poor on single threads...so

....compare to telkom....and other service providers....down lines and can't connect for weeks at a time, because of this......maximum download even with multi threading at 5 Kbytes....having to actually dial in and then find you can't connect.

Must use antenna and get Signal strength up to at least 29 and ber to 71

But it's up to you:)

ic, please, your boss needs to be shot if you're considering mywireless over adsl512k, I pay 1500 for a 512k connection... guess what, I barely get 56k speeds internationally. yea sure, local is fine, but if i wanted fast local and slow international I'll go with adsl... wait a minute, I AM going adsl... I'd rather have 3 gig of RELIABLE internet connectivity than 56k of slow UNRELIABLE internet connectivity.

if you're running a business and need the internet as an integral part of it, you'll be let down time and time again on the incompetence that is Sentech, whenever you need your connection the most, that is the time it's the slowest or non-existant. I'd wait for iburst if you want another solution other than telkom, but if you're a serious business you'd get adsl.

but by what you said about it not being in the budget, you should ask yourself this question : Does your business REALLY need internet?

I've managed a couple of businesses including an internet cafe... and alot of folks on the other forums run their own inet cafe's on ADSL, none of them I know has mywireless... even though it's uncapped and fixed etc...

please dude, catch a wake up, unfortunatly telkom is still the answer for the next several months....

Any consideration given to utilisation of Sucktech's service offerings would be misplaced and disastrous in the extreme, for reasons averred to over-and-over again on this forum. It's also not just a question of pure upfront costings - you need to factor in the cost of the putrid service as well (opportunity cost), which would be loss of connectivity, inadequate speeds, etc. Bottom line - DON'T GO SENTECH.

ic, I use MW 256 for exactly what you are going to use it for. I have found it works great for just pop3 and smtp. Just make sure you have a local (SA) pop3 server that you are going to pull mail from. I use Hetzner in Capetown and my mail server pulls mails at ± 20 kBps.

Apart from the ridiculously slow international throughput (I have a speed ticket open that must be 3 months old now), it performs OK for our business.

Just beware, you mention FTP - is this to upload or download? Since MW is asymetrical, you will only get half your package speed for uploads. This has been confirm by one of the techies at Sentech (not a helpdesk guy).

ic, if your business needs internet access which is faster/more stable than 56k modem, I'd go for ISDN 64k, and to save on phone costs, I'll dialup and do my antivirus updates etc after hours (you can schedule this, just manage it because sometimes bugs creep up and you'll sit with a hefty monthly bill)

iBurst should cover your area already. I'll strongly suggest asking them for a beta testing period, beta testers pays for the connectivity, and if you sign a 24 month contract you pay something like 450ex vat (check the iburst forums)

what type of business if i may ask?

I use MW for business on 128k. Since installing in Feb we have saved about R6000 on phone bills to ISP's for local traffic such as banking, tenders, online ordering, etc.
If you want always on, for EMail, I can respond within minutes, local traffic, then in my opinion MW is the best bet at present.

However, if you need to contact overseas sites and download large amounts of data, or play online games, go for ADSL on a month to month basis.

Don't lock in to a long term contract.

easy...dont get mywireless

ic.. this is a serious gamble your taking. I am also starting a new company and got myself adsl. The homedsl is a good solution. Yes, you will have a 3 gig cap but for R100 per month more that MyLame 128 you get almost 3 times the speed! The HomeDSL 348 costs about R750 per month. The installation is a bit expensive (About R1800 which includes proata, modem and installation) but after that its the same. This is much more reliable.

Trust me, tried sentech, got reamed, gave them the finger!

Still waiting for the installation (1.5 weeks since order) but theyve been there about 3 times. So no dorment stuff!

IC - here's an approach you may wish to consider:

1.) Tell the powers-that-be that upfront costings seem to justify going the MyWi route, without quality-of-service considerations;

2.) As QOS is regarded as of secondary importance in the decision (despite the experiential stance of many in this forum), you will accede to the bean-counter approach, with the qualification that should QOS prove to be unacceptable after a period of 3-6 months of operation, you insist that all decisions of this nature rest solely and only with you, in unfettered form, with this being adopted as formal policy for the foreseeable future;

3.) The assessment of the service after the 3-6month period should be conducted by an independent auditor, preferably an ISACA member with an understanding of the risk management requirement.

Methinx key to this decision is to what extent do connectivity issues impact on the provision of your core business, viz. training. If you're going to provide on-line training either now or in the future, the powers-that-be had better consider using Diginet, IMHO...

IC, I spoke with the iburst people earlier today, check out www.iburst.co.za for pricing. Their official launch is only next year, but they have a pre-launch package which is roughly the same as mywireless' 128k package, but it's burstable up to 1mbps. There is suppose to be a 3 gig cap on it, and as soon as you hit the cap, you're throttled to 64k, but I dug around and found they havent implemented it on the pre-launch package YET. If they do it's probably going to be just for the pre-launch package, but they're still deciding on it seeing as how much flack they've received regarding the implementation of a 3 gig cap ala Telkom.

I should be getting iburst by end of this week, if I feel it's service is marginally better (and it already is, the lady I spoke to, for a chick, seemed more knowledgable about their products than the mywireless orcs will ever be)

So as soon as I have "tested" it, I'll be cancelling mywireless (and my application for adsl) and be switching to a pre-launch service that looks to be twice as good as my current package SUPPOSED to be, only half the price. I can live with that...

if you wanna know what I heard, they already experiencing teething problems, and http is virtually non-existant, and has been like that for almost 2 weeks!
and latency's shot up since presubscription!
theen again, BigBooBs volume 9 isn't available on http , so that shouldn't be a prob [:)]

hmmm, sound like any other network in early stages, which way it goes from here, only time will tell!
