Hi

Im just asking if anyone has developed on any mobile platform (iOS, Android, or even webOS lol?) the reason i ask is that I want to start but i dont know where to begin

are there virtual environments which let you develop on devices even though you dont have one? (like devving on an iPad and you dont have one..)

Pick a platform and let google be your friend. They are all different.

I'd have a look at Appcelerator Titanium. Then you only need to write your app once to support iOS and Android.

Android SDK has an emulator.

Give phonegap and jquerymobile a look. Write once for multiple platforms.

If you are looking at doing this for income I would recommend looking at iOS 1st as it is the only platform where you will be able to sell your applications for money.

I would also highly recommend getting a physical device to test your apps on, in the case of iOS you can get a iTouch for say R2000 and it will give you a proper indication of how your application would look and feel. Emulator is only good for code debugging and will never give you a proper indication of how smooth an application runs or how it feels using touch input.

On iOS you will need to join as a developer that also cost you money.

On Android side you can start of cheaper but won't be able to sell your application on the market directly, there is groups that will sell your apps for you but it comes with risks and a cut of your income. I have a HTC wildfire and a HTC desire for development because of the screen sizes in this side for my testing.

On Windows mobile 7. They have the best developer suite and training on site but currently the worst entry for income as there market share is very small.

Oh and seeing that you have a Desire you can always start with Android development, download the SDK and I would highly recommend doing some Java cource/tutorial 1st before you start Android development.

And before I get flamed, Yes I know Android is not Java but code is Java based but 99% of the material you find about Android development is under the impression that you know Java.

I'm pretty well versed in Java. I am doing it for interests sake not for income. the only reason why I would like to try iOS is because it would probably be a bigger learning curve for me (learn Objective C in the process)

Well in that case head on Over to Apple's site, sign up to the developer program, its only $99 per year and go download Xcode

It comes with a simulator but I would still highly recommend getting a iPod touch, 8 gig would do.
They have allot of training material on the site.

If you don't have a Mac to run Xcode on, virtualize, PM me if you need help with it.

Android also has an eclipse plugin they actually recommended you use it, works well and the emulator can be setup for various phones (screen sizes, RAM, storage etc). I also suggest testing on an actual device especially a full touch screen device.

As far as I understand but correct me if I am wrong, you can get the iOS dev kit for free but have to join the developer program once you want to place your app on the market. Again I talk under correction as this was seen from a "hack"intosh installation.

I only really know about the BB stuff since I was researching it earlier in the week. I'certainly not advocating it over anything else. My view is that I'll develop for the phone I own. Then again I don't have a grand plan. If the OP has one he should do his own research according to his needs

Appcelerator is a good place to start. Android's SDK is also good, you get the emulator and a decent API to find out what you need.

If it's for fun, I'd recommend looking at Android and Blackberry together. Both use Eclipse, and trying something that works cross-platform would certainly be a challenge. ;)

Ive done some stuff on iOs for Iphone and messed around with Ipad just for the fun.

The Virtual development and SDK is all free, there is also a free graphics engine that ties in with apple's SDK.
I build one of those escape the room games using frames and google's sketchup.

But i dont really have time to complete it.

The other drawback it you will need a mac osx environment, i used virtual box and even went and bought a mac osx snow leopard disk.
I was serious about getting apps done for Iphone but i just dont have the time for it.

There is allot of money to be made! :-)
