Hello, ppl!
Almost two monthes I try to get Telkom's WiMAX service, but still didn't receive any call back. May be somebody knows what happen there?
I did 2 calls with usual promises "We will call you" (translation: "Just get off"), I even visited their branch - no any progress. :(
It seems, I'll have the same "support" after I'll install hardware!
What you think, may be I must get rid of companies like Telscum?

I ordered in November, and it was installed a week ago.
I get very good signal, and once you get them to install, the service is great!
Oh and they do not install it them selves. They use a 3rd party company for wimax installs.

Thanks, Crafty! Oh, I (hope)thought they all are dead. Have you copy of agreement you signed with Telkom? Can I look at it? (w/o details, of course :) )

Telkom

Hi

Got my wimax installed with in a week still waiting to connect it is now a month and they still dont know why they gave me a wrong curcuit number and seems they cant find a new one or just not interested. In the mean while a new telephone cable was installed got a home phone and a 4 meg line and got connected in 1 day hope it last

Hi, shaolintiger!
Open us secret, please, HOW?!?! How did you get WiMAX in a week?? I called 'em on 10217, 10219, called Internet division... Unbeliveable, but employed monkeys knows nothing about what they sell! Their job is to redirect callers to different department, until people become crazy. Stupid idiots...

Go to a Telkom Direct shop - preferably don't use the 10217 - apply for the Wimax line - they "may" tell you that there is no Wimax - fill in the application and write Wimax all ove it - tell them you want them to submit your application and then insist on a ref. - When you have the ref you can at least direct the call to many offices for further help - the ref is essential.

If they say they don't know what Wimax is refer them to
http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/wimax/faq.html This is thier website and has all the detials - prices, how to order etc - they cannot tell you that they don't know - it is one of the products on their web site

Thanks, Kicker!
Lately I called again their "service" and reach some qualified person, who disappoint me: she told me WiMAX is available for non-DSL customers only(!!!). I.e. if I have wires, I cannot apply for WiMAX. *fall into a swoon* Moreover: even if she'll put my order in queue, it will be rejected due to reason above. Anybody knows good killer??

More news from Telscum: When I visited their branch, worker phoned to WiMAX service and we had useless discussion related am I covered or not. Funny, but he says I have no signal, but telkom's map shows that my area is OK (It's PDF for a whole JHB). I avoid next discussion and returned to work, giving 'em new call from office. Oops... I AGAIN reach some monkeys, who only redirect me everywhere in Telscum! It seems, Telkom works for Telkom only. After my call to general service I again receive promises "We will call you" (you know translation). Now day is almost out, no any call. Hate that zoo...

I got the same response. Called the next day to cancel the DSL order.. my area the copper is rubbish.. my neighbor has a telkom technician out to fix his line at least once a week. I called 2 days later to order wimax. the operator checked for my signal and gave me a reference number. I'm going to the telkom shop to get an install date.

I waited just over 3 months... and now its installed... but its working intermittently... maybe someone here can help.... very short problem... websites ( 80 + ssl sites) don't work... iow... I keep getting massive timeouts and packet loss...even though the tech said I had a 70% signal.... What is the IP Address of the alvarion device so that I can check? -

Ports like 119 and 21 work 100%.... no slowdowns or timeouts... just websites... I have noticed that I get a lot of TCP TIME_WAIT commands from the router... but I doubt its the router since I've reflashed it about 18 times now...

I am also considering wimax but the pricing is confusing. How much will I pay for a 1gig bundle? I also saw a broacher that sad I wouldn't get wifi with if, is that true?

Grintek fail

My wimax was installed 2 weeks ago. I was told it was activated the next day. After numerous calls to all the many numbers that Telkom call centre agents fob you off too, I eventually found out the truth. For over two weeks now, there has been a software fault caused by one of their software vendors (I was told Grintek).

Just so happens that the fault was corrected yesterday eventually, so I am finally up and running. Good luck to the rest of you trying to get connected as I was told the backlog is big due to the problem.

PS. I swear.. Telkom call centre staff are not interested in helping people just refering a person from one number to the next until you get refered back to the number you started off with. I was even told to call the one number and choose option 4... Here's the catch.. there are only two options on that IVR.

I know that if you set a static IP of 192.168.254.251 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and default gateway of 192.168.254.200 you will be able to open the config of your unit in a browser using http://192.168.254.200. The username and pwd is installer/installer.

been trying for 4months and gave up! went to xnet, more expensive way better service! very fast and stable

Thanks for the info! But... it's still _telkom_ lines - I have to pay for their wires. Ideally I want to be totaly independed from those monkeys, this is why I want WiMAX.
