It's looking like my company is willing to pay for a degree. I did a stint at CTI where I got a diploma in Information Systems Engineering (What a waste).

So I'm looking for any info from people who have studied part-time through UNISA. I've heard a few horror stories of admin nightmares and random marking of exams. Is this true?

Also, is a Bsc worthwhile? I have a decent job but really want something solid behind my name.

Thanks

I did a BSc in IT Management through UNISA and completed it in 2008.

Back then, admin nightmares were not that bad. Now, my nieces, nephews and friends have real horror stories. Waiting in endless lines for countless hours.

A BSc IS WORTH WHILE. Do it at any reputable university.

Don't know if it helps much, but here is a ranking table.

is this degree the same as an infomatics/infomation systems degree just by another name?

also what are the requirements? do you get any credit for qualifications you already have?

One has Calculus, one has Accounting. Make your choice, not many astronauts with bcom's and not many accountants with BSC's

im an IT dude wanting to further my studies. need to bulk up on the business side of things. bsc or bcom?

not quite following your reference?

is the one for more technical people and the one for more admin focused people?

Career choice.

BSC is a Bachelor of Science, Bcom is Bachelor of commerce. The names kind of hint at what they are meant for ;) Apples and Oranges.

Which is better depends on what skill is in demand more.

From - http://www.unisa.ac.za/qualifications/index.asp?link=http://www.unisa.ac.za/qualifications/Qualifications/98906.html

"A National Senior Certificate (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning, and Mathematics with at least 50%. Students will be streamed into the Extended Programme depending on their Academic Point Scores (APS). Students who do not meet the additional requirements may follow Unisa's alternative pathway."

I did Maths Lit in high school so I don't know if that will be an issue for admission?

I don't know about the credit qualifications. How would this help me?

Received my BSc in Computing from UNISA last year,

Their admin can be really, really untidy and frustrating, but you wil generally not be dealing with them much after you have first applied and registered. The MyUnisa online system is where you access most of your course details and instructions.

In my experience, do not expect much help from your lecturers. They take ages to reply to queries, IF they reply (this depends on module lecturer of course, but that is what I experienced).

Regarding exam marks, I had 1 wrong exam mark out of 31, just asked for a remark, waited 3 months and they replied that yes, they had made a mistake and remarked it. Assignment marks can also take ages, so mark your assignments yourself if they post the solutions before you receive your mark.

Course content I would say compares with what other universities offer, from what I hear. The course is fairly tough, especially 3rd year, and you will HAVE to solve most problems you encounter yourself. But it is doable, I passed cum laude  (shameless plug) while working +- 60 hours a week. Kiss your social life goodbye though, you will be breathing, studying and working.

Good luck!

Thanks for this. This is exactly what I was looking for.
The tougher it is, the better sense of achievement I will have once I'm done.

I can't see when applications open. I only see for last year August. Would that mean they will open again this year August?

Hi,

Yes, it seems that the dates have not been finalised yet (http://applications.unisa.ac.za/). Keep an eye on that page.
If you like a challenge, you have come to the right place, they will test your commitment thoroughly.

Best of luck, it IS worth it.

Busy with it now. Not that tough yet, but good course.

I did Bsc Computational Intelligence, did not finish though did enough for the Nat Dip and then life happened. Was interesting and I am am thinking of checking if I can get some credit and finish it.

Finished in 2004 so quite some time ago.

Minor thread hijack - just two questions:

- Why did you do 31 exams? The syllabus only has 30 modules. I've done 28 so far, on my last two - hope I didn't leave one out :P
- When do you know that you're definitely going to qualify? I've searched high and low for an answer. All I know is that an audit will take place sometime, and nothing more :(

As for the communication issue, it's definitely a struggle. Like Legionnaire said, once you've registered the first time, you won't really be dealing with them much - everything is online.

However if you do need to chat to someone, it's best to go and camp at one of the campuses. I've tried and failed.

You have not checked the previous thread where you had asked that question ><

If you have selected the correct modules PLUS specified on the registration page that you can finish your degree with this module selection, will an audit be done. Did you follow this process? Under 'Academic record' your status should reflect that you are a final year student.

My bad - I never saw your reply :P

I did check that box, but under Academic record, the status is "Qualification not Complete".
