I am not totally new to networks, done some basic windows networking, setup lans etc. Am stumped here tho. Had ADSL installed, bought a Marconi 1 port ethernet router/modem (will be 5 users + possible server) + separate 8 port switch. Connected said technological innovations (no server yet), followed instructions and after much tweaking of Router settings got web access.
Then in a moment of foolishness installed Service Pack 2 to "take advantage of the added security features". Blue screen of death, freeze, freeze, etc etc.
Uninstalled SP2. PC running smooth again but ADSL now not happening.
Status check on Router says "PPPoE_Connected", speeds are indicated and modem light for ADSL is solidly shining.
I can ping the router.
I even thumbsucked an external ip and successfully pinged that.
So... seems to indicate either DNS not happening or there are some ports being blocked but why this suddenly came about is beyond me.
Checked local ip settings and all seems correct including DNS and Gateway. Have not found any port settings on the router....

Any ideas? plans of action?

Shot in the dark here. What's your firewall doing? Possibly blocking IE, or some such like?

PC DNS set to Router Wan IP.
Router DNS set to Telkom prescribed DNS. (196.25.1.1 and 196.25.1.9)
Firewall (ZoneAlarm) set to allow Explorer.
Will have to wait til I return home to try 'nslookup'

Change DNS to 196.25.1.11 and 196.43.1.11 - also try using IS DNS 196.4.160.2

Thanks for the help. Tried the alternative DNS settings both in the router and in PC's IP settings. No joy. Sat with a Telkom Techie who seemed to know a bit about the routers and he couldnt figure it out either. Will take the router into a Telkom centre and let them test it. Great that there is a site with help for ADSL users.

Don't forget about XP's firewall. I found that it sometimes has a mind of it's own.
