Hi. I'll be in Turkey for 10 DAYS in June. Landing in Istanbul. From what I've seen online, Istanbul, Ephesus and Cappadocia are the main places to visit.

Any tips or recommendations?

Are you woman? If you are do not travel alone. And second you HAVE to go see the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (istanbul). That is all.
 
I went to Turkey about 8 years ago for a family holiday it was amazing, Istanbul is the most amazing city I have ever been to, make sure to check out the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, GRAND BAZAAR {this was the most amazing place in the whole Turkey (make sure to haggle with everyone you buy from |and enjoy loooots of apple tea (it's delicous)... )} and the Palace with the Harem on the hill [I can't remember the name} their all worth seeing...

Ephesus is worth it for Mother Mary's house and the super awesome Roman ruins their...

Whatever the wonder of the {ancient} world that is in Turkey, the temple of Artemis (I Think it's called} is a Massive dissapointment, basically a pillar in a swamp with hawkers selling "ancient artifacts they dug up in the area"" {as if}... But Saint John's tomb is also worth checking out.

Troy is super dissapointing {Can't remember where it's located} don't go their it sucks................. otherwise Turkey has amazing beaches {on the Med with no waves and crystal clear (as a South African I found this weird)}.

Just whatever you do make sure you put lot's of time aside for the Grand Bazaar {it rocks}...

Also as said above don't go their NO MATTER WHAT as a single woman, "alone", I got at least 5 offers their {serious ones} to buy my sister's off me (for marriage) and as I understand it I only got those because I was a man "escorting" female family members (As I understand it this is normal in their society) that men sell off female family members...

Istanbul is absolutely amazing. If you can, try and get digs in Sultanahmet, the major tourist attractions are all pretty close to that (Blue Mosque, Saint Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar, etc). You can take the tram to Kabatas (Dolmabahce Palace) and from there the funicular to Taksim Square (Istiklal Caddisi).

Turkish girls are very very easy on the eye too!

I were in Istanbul last year for work. Saw the airport, the hotel and Vodafone server room. Did not really impress me much from what I could see.
Getting through the airport took 3 hours. SA citizens do not need a visa any more (since Oct 2011), but no-one at the airport knew the right process. Ended up going through the same gates as Iranian citizens.

Obviously, your mileage will vary ...
 
Yes i've been told that I can get a visa on arrival, hope there isn't too much hassle with that. Will look for accomodation in Sultanahmet for my days in Istanbul.

If you have a South African passport, you don't need a visa. Just have to go to the right gate, get stamped (this process might take 1 hour, as they don't do it at the actual gate. You will see what I mean.), and get your luggage.
 
Went to Turkey last July.... Best time... Weather was awesome... People are wonderful, the women are exceptional.....
Things are a bit expensive... The foods aren't bad... But not great. You must go to Egyptian spice market... Some very nice sweets and fresh Turkish delight. Also try Hafez Mustapha in Istanbul for good Turkish coffee..

My dad went to Cyprus a few years back. Cypriots and Turks don't get along nicely, so they have "Cyprus Delights" in Cyprus. WOW... is all I can say. The stuff tastes amazing.
 
Are there any other countries near Turkey that don't require me to get a visa?
 
Yep, been there a few years ago for a competition. Very nice people and always welcoming you into their homes, the rural folk although not the city folk. Food is delicious also. :)
 
Still not sorted out my itinerary and it's 2 weeks away. Probably just going to hang around Istanbul and perhaps visit Cappadoccia.
