Would driving to Maun be best? And taking tours from there if you don't have a 4x4.

When we did the Botswana tour as family, you couldn't make it by normal car. I believe that road is now a tar road leading up to Maun. If you plan on taking shortcut and driving through the central game reserve - think again.

That's what I was asking. So the drive up to Maun is fine? And only after that a 4x4 is required?

I've heard that it's quite wet in December and the road is in terrible condition so would like to hear from someone who's done it recently.

You can drive to Maun just fine with any vehicle. I wouldn't even want to take a fancy 4X4 from there on. The main road into the reserve is like a wash board. Will rattle everything loose :D. Take a sturdy well built vehicle... old school tough ...
