Anyone elllses's old fashioned DSTV remote suddenly quit working?

This morning my old remote stopped working, funny though it seems to register with the 'remote blaster' extender device as the light flashes when you press a button.
no biggy, i'll just buy a new remote, i thought.
come home with the new (one with the silver ring around the OK) this afternoon. works fine when pointed at the decoder but the 'remote blaster' won't pick it up...

what gives? personally i think they fiddled with firmware because the colours of the OSD changed too
 
Me too, was just busy charging the batteries.

Looks in drawer for original remote - finds original remote, all still sealed with new batteries!! :)

it's probably not the remote control, but more likely to be that crappy Ellies wireless 'remote blaster' ... I had several remote blasters before i dumped them, and bought the TV link product instead. It looks like the image at http://www.sam-radford.me.uk/images/tvlink.jpg ... and I ordered mine online, but I think Multichoice outlets also stock them .. it was way cheaper too than the rubbish remote blaster

Tried switching it on this morning, and nothing. removed the power cord, waited a few minutes, and put it back. It came on scanned for the channels, then switched off. went and sat in front of the decoder (30CM) and was able to switch it on.

Seems it no longer accept inputs from our remotes. the one it came with only works if it's within a meter of the unit (with new batteries) and the exit and info buttons no longer work, the SDPVR's remotes used to work up to yesterday (before the update (switched to Z ) but no longer.

It could be because of the new decoder firmware

My dstv remote is working, but as of this morning my Harmony 650 not working at all. Menu also looks different. Must have been upgrade last night. Is nou baie moerrig!

I thought my remote was bust. I have a new decoder as well as the older 1110 or whatever the hell they're called. The older remote is now giving a hit. Sometimes works sometimes does not. *******s.
 
From the DSTV forum ... a post by one of MCA's people..

After further investigation we have concluded that only customers that use the old standard definition PVR remote controls should be affected by this if the remote control unit dial is set to Z .This problem can be resolved as follows:

DSD 1110 - Please change the dial to any of the red (1A to 1D) or blue (2A to 2D) modes, depending on your decoders Remote Control Mode settings.
DSD 1131 - Please note that this decoder does no longer support the old PVR remote control and should be used with the remote control that it was purchased with.

one callout of installers later, and the v-link grafts 100's. turns out the splitter i was using since the remote blaster days was not the correct type
 
DSTV - so much more bull****

As per atomcrusher's post. I have a DSD 1131 decoder and the universal remote. I phoned DSTV, and they have confirmed that their upgrade has now stopped the universal remote from working with the DSD 1131.

Being the big corporate that they are I received a lot of "Oooh's" and "Aaaah's" and "We apologise for the inconvenience, but you will have to go and buy the original remote for R60.00 at your nearest multichoice center"

60 bucks is nothing, but the principal and inconvenience of it all is worth more. This is completely and utterly ridiculous.

Just another money making scheme from DSTV. I hope DSTV realises the damage they have done. This will ultimately result in me cancelling my subscription, and to get my daily TV fix, I would need to buy pirated DVDs off William Nicol, and due to their poor quality my eyes would begin to deteriorate, resulting in extra costs involved with getting prescription glasses, and eye laser surgery, which would end up with me being blind for a few days, ultimately losing my job, leaving me poor and pennyless and selling my body for crack in Hillbrow.

Thank you DSTV for making me a crack addict.

Had the same problem, but one of my Ellie's remotes is programmable (Wizard 4) and the code seems to have changed from 4461 to [-]4511[/-] 4501 with the upgrade. I was just on the point of making the trip to mchoice as I thought my decoder had died, when I decided to check with the original remote. So my other Ellie's remote is now a piece of plastic scrap...

Channel 100 - when developing the feature, we noticed some serious "funnies" when no favourites were selected at all - so "forced" a favourite channel (which houses the DStv Dish on TV plus some programming info). We agree this isn't 100% ideal - but did not want to prevent the product from rolling out. PS : if you regularly use weather/news, I recommend adding 415 as a favourite channel.

The lady at the local multi choice store in Ladysmith KZN smiling annd asked me to cough up R150 for a new decoder remote. Funny how multi choice stores seem to have alot of extra remotes in stock.
So I told her to shove it where the sun don't shine.
Guess I will send the missus in tomorrow to buy one.
I cannot wait for decent competition to dstv. I will dump them with a smile, the same way I dumped telkom as my ISP the moment uncapped came along.
 
They should open source their software (except the decoding bits) so that we could fix these issues.
There is a whole bunch of other 'funnies' that I wish they would fix!
