line noise (yes my filters/phone/router config is correct), frequent disconnects, line syncs at 384 down and 64 up, then 96 up... authentication failures. netgear dg834g.

Luckily not me, but I feel your pain bru ;)

frack frack frack frack frack.

i've moved all the power cables/lan cables/telephone cables/ desk lamp cables/rubbish bin/unplugged printer cable/shoes/dead moth as far away from my router and line as i can without hiring a decorator, and its holding up so far. could power do this? like emi perhaps?

well the symptoms show power can do it, but it's probably just a once off thing that happened, there are internet problems today, so I wouldn't worry too much, but you are exactly like me, even if my exchange is busted, I'll try and remedy it from my side, lol, I hate an internet connection that doesn't work, it's the worse thing on earth ;)

While your microfilters and cables are correctly connected, and you're suddenly getting interference on the line that causes ADSL-synch problems, the most likely cause is one or more faulty microfilters.

Use a process of elimination: disconnect all analogue telephone devices so that only your ADSL modem|router is connected to the line, if the result is:
  1. Your ADSL modem|router then synchs & the connection is stable, then its a faulty analogue device - probably a microfilter; OR
  2. Your ADSL modem|router continues to have synch problems, then it's an interference issue somewhere between your premises and the exchange, and it could be your ADSL modem|router or the RJ11 telephone cable.
