I use Storm (http://www.stormnet.co.za) for ISDN dialup alongside an ADSL connection, primarily because of their excllent international latency.

For the past year - via Storm - I have always had pings in the 200ms range to both the UK and USA. Over the last few weeks however, something seems to have changed with their traffic routing, with pings now closer to the 400ms range. Anyone know anything about this? A Storm employee, maybe [:)]?

Traces below (both used to be in the region of 270 (USA) and 200 (UK)

Yea, I've been with Storm for years - they are great.

You always get to talk to someone with a name.

I pay R240.00 for my adsl - it's proven cheaper overall.

Yeh Microfast - agree.

What is your international latency like the last few weeks? I would appreciate it if you could ping those ip's in my post above - they are more than 100ms slower than they used to be.

Don't have dial-up here so with all adsl going via Telkom can't give Storm a rating on adsl. What I can say is that my dial-up with Storm was always great.

The node is losing packets - up to 40%

This has been the case for some days now.

Watch Telkom talk about viruses.

The problem is with SAIX (Telkom.) There are some nasty stories doing the round about their network overutilization.

One of the current problems for SAIX is ADSL. They were under the impression that the services would not be that popular and that most users would be "lite" users. The facts are that most users are not and it's causing some network problems.

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

It all depends on your definition of lite user - I would classify an ADSL user as a light user as even with my 64kbps ISDN line I can potentially download in excess of 6GB per month where as an ADSL user can download only 3gb (at twice the cost I might add) - the ONLY advantage to ADSL is its always on.

That said Telkom certainly hasnt made provision for its users bandwidth ensuring that bottlenecks dont occur. ISDN users have CHOICE in who they effectively buy their bandwidth from, ADSL users do not. My question is - if other ISP's can carry effectively 6GB of my traffic for R119 per month and still remain profitable, why cant Telkom?

Elementary my dear Sash. They did not indicate that they can't make a profit at R119 for 6GB, it is just that they make so much more at R1000 for 3GB and not having the need to share that [;)]

This is a very good point indeed but thats Telkom for u as long as there is no competion they will squeeze every penny they can out of u and will carry on doing so untill they are forced to stop .
This is sooo sad i am lost for words[:(]
