If you managed reading with the iPad 1, then the Pro won't be too different - weight is mostly the same, but it's obviously more bulky.

Certainly cannot see it as feasible lying down on your back holding it up - but if you're reading on the couch etc., then should be fine.
True about iPad1 weight. Didnt think about it but doesnt bother me too much. Agreed

It's virtually the size of an A4 page. PDF's in Goodreader allow a small zoom, to cut-out the unused borders, and you're reading the entire page, with no scrolling required, apart from turning the page. To do the same on the Air, you would have to scroll once and effectively 'divide' the page in two... Seriously not a big deal though, so wouldn't discount the Air on those grounds.
I use GoodReader and do crop the page to exclude white borders, but some of the docs/books I read are still too small too comfortably read. Maybe the Air is better with its Retina display. Will have to check it out

So I'd also suggest you wait for the Air 3.
If you're not interested in the Pencil, and annotating/drawing on those technical PDFs, then think the Air will be more than sufficient for your needs.
I am interested in the pencil. Reason is that my son is very creative. Very good at sketching.

Another reason is I develop software and I get new ideas all the time. My workflow for ideas is usually to write it up on the whiteboard, cause its easy to play around on it. Then take a photo with my phone and email to myself. Then save it somewhere and implement/document. It might be easier with a tablet/pencil because I am not always close to a white board. But then I might not have a tablet at hand either, although it is more likely.

Hmm... Unless the Air 3 comes out with Pencil support, then I'd say you're probably going to get more out of the Pro then. I'm recovering my budget a bit, before ordering the Pencil - but from what I've read, and seen from real-life users over at Macrumors and the like, it's a game changer.

As it stands, simply using my old Adonit Jot Pro on Notability has already seen the benefit of the extra size. The palm rejection is impressive (and that's saying plenty from a lefty!), and not having to move things on as much due to the screen size, is a nice plus. I can write and scribble/doodle away quite easily in Notability, and the Pencil apparently makes this experience even better...

I splurged on Procreate ($5.99?), and have been wasting several hours 'drawing' again (I use that in the loosest possible manner) - something I haven't done for many, many years... It's the ability to easily add and move around layers that makes things far more enjoyable than what I initially thought possible.

I took the plunge on the Pro because I missed writing stuff down, and wanted what was written digitally available. The Pro goes a far way to making that very feasible for me. Since I spend a fair amount of time annotating PDFs as well, it really was a no-brainer.

That said, I'd by lying if I didn't mention I was initially thinking I should hold off and wait to see what the Air 3 brings. If it had Pencil support, then I was going to be as happy as a Pig in the Proverbial...
Fortunately(!!) my impatience got the better of me. Had I waited, and were the Air 3 to have the Pencil, I would've gone for the latter, no questions asked.
Knowing what I know now, that would have seen me missing out on the Pro's screensize... and I wouldn't have been any wiser to how useful it is to have...

All in, I'm certainly not treating it as a laptop replacement, nor will I ever. And it is, in its essence, just a bigger tablet. But I'm thinking the Pencil is going to make it all worthwhile - and even if it doesn't meet my expectations, I'm already happy enough with what the extra space has meant to me, in terms of what I'm using it for.

My iPads get extensive use but donner the Pro is pricey...what a machine though

Maybe in a few years time. We know the A9X & 4gb is a beast.

Yes I realise, but then you have to end up panning all over the place. Mini will not work for me for the same reason.

Depends what you are reading.

eBooks require no panning, it gets reformatted with larger text for the same page size.
