I went to dslreports.com and did the speed test when i select the top company to test with, itjust about opens up the page and then all of a sudden shuts down all my internet explorer windows as well as firefox - have disabled all popup software??

hmmm sounds like something has got into your pc that shouldn't have...

try antivirus
or anti spyware

Also could be some setting or corrupt file involved in script execution.

Just ideas

dont know the test but if it uses java try installing the latest java virtual machine from www.sun.com

Had the same problem, had to install the latest Java VM

I had no problem with the Application, try installing the latest java app from www.Sun.com
Besides, the tests were so inacurate.
