Hi Guys

I'm looking at doing my first Triathlon early next year and are going to start training today. It will only be for the sprint Triathlon.

Can anyone shed some advice? The triathlonsa website does not seem to have a forum.

Welcome to the club. Also started training for the Sprint triathlon for next year. My best suggestion is to ask a friend that is doing it to help. That is what I did.

The only triathlones my friends participate in is the ones that require a cigarette, beer and braai thongs.

I've done two sprint triathlons and two indoor triathlons.

Only advice, train if you want to enjoy it. And if it is a sea swim then do some sea swimming as training. May sound unnecessary to say but the ocean is mighty different to a pool.

Also prepare to hop off that bike and have legs that won't work until you are well into the run :)

All that being said, with those sprint distances it is easily doable but still feels like a great accomplishment.

Thanks guys I will start reading.

What is the average costs of entering a sprint Triathlone? Also how frequently do they happen around Gauteng?

Do an online search as there are a number of sites that have event calendars for mtb, triathlons etc. In Durban a sprint triathlon entry is around R200.

What's a braai thong? So you all get together for a braai, smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, all the while wearing purpose made thongs for the occasion? :wtf:

My wife's nephew is an international triathlon champion. Heckuva thing, he's only like 17.

Why do you think I'm trying to get into other hobbies?

I started tri this year. A good series for beginners is the BSG Tri-series (sprints) http://www.bsgmultisport.co.za/events/bsg-triseries

The series is finished for this year (last event was this past Sunday), but there is always next year.

For the off-road there is the Sasol cross-series and the Xterra events.

As mentioned before, just take it easy and learn the ropes. Compete against yourself, i.e. finish the race, improve times etc. You can also just go to a sprint event to watch, there you can watch and ask how everything works, i.e. transition setup etc.

For gear specific to triathlon, some Sportmanswarehouse stock tri-suites and swimsuits (wetsuit). What ‘s nice about this is, is that you can go and fit them on to see what size is ideal for you, cause the sizing charts can be hectic.

Another place that has some wicked specials on tri-suites and swim-suites (wetsuit) from time to time is the following: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com. It’s a UK site, but sometimes their specials are so good that even with DHL shipping and customs it is way cheaper than buying local.

Another site that sometimes have nice options: http://www.capemulti.co.za/

Good luck, I am training up for the Ultra distances next year in Feb and March. :)
