Up here in the bush we are still running our payroll on physical time books....

The English HO ain't interested in moving with the times by embracing technology.

Unlike other business's we have quite an easy way of controlling staff and they have much leeway on access control, just coming to ask a manager if they can pop out to the bank, post office etc....

But lately , I have found staff out of the store without permission....

I want to install one of those fingerprint reader's at the front door, that every staff will have to use when coming to work...

My plan being to draw a report out that I can show to the English HO and then eventually link the system to her payroll system....

I want to show her how it will make running her payroll a lot easier and give me and the managers better control of walkabout staff....

How expensive are these systems, have about 80 workers......

Are you involved with these systems?

Can you give any input?

cheers

We have one - for access control, not sure how much is costs but I think you could get a cheap solution for a few thousand rand.

Remember though they can be unreliable and then guys will complain because they can't get in or out... then they start making other plans.

There are all kinds of problems, you need to have some one who checks that everyone is actually signing out, if two people go out then they must both scan their fingers etc

If the guys are against it they will work against the system making it fail.

I foresee problems. if your observation skills are anything to go by. aren't there many places to exit though?

Contact the guys at Eco Time. They have a couple of options which should work nicely for you. They can also ship you everything and you do DIY install.

Edit: It also interfaces with most payroll systems, so another plus.

Your problem is when they slip out with someone else.

Now the system will say they are still inside. Sure they might have a problem getting back in and will need to sign in and then it shows them as having been out but you'll have no idea for how long.

Also if they manage to get in by some other means then you'll never know they were even gone in the first place.

I think an "uitkak session" will be much more effective.

I used to work for a company that manufactures fingerprint readers in SA using OEM hardware.

As mentioned a lot of things impacts how effective adoption of a system like that would be. If it is a normal door you need to consider that one person could open and everyone can walk out without "tagging" and you would not be able to track that so you will need some kind of turnstyle etc to force a scan. An alternate approach is to go with a no tag no pay approach but as it is right now it looks like that option is out.

The type of work the people do you are trying to manage also has an impact. As an example, if they work with their hands in rough environments their fingerprints might be too light or change to often to use effectively. I had a client who had a bunch of guys sanding plastic welds all day who had no fingerprints. Fingerprints also fade with age so keep in mind the older you are the harder it (and this is only my observation) might be to use effectively.

A decent reader is going to cost you upwards of R6k (last time I checked) and then you still need locks and probably a turnstyle so it can be quite an expensive exercise. Especially if your staff dont get paid by the hour.

It would probably be more effective to just have a log book (or an in/out board) where if you need to head to a shop it needs to be noted down (because people need to be able to know if you arent around) and if you leave the office without noting it down you will have to take a half day of leave for wasting people's time.

A simple solution like that will have a far better effect than a fancy fingerprint reader which is really too easy to jippo...

Only one way in and out....through the front door with Joe Public....

It's easier just to tag them with a GPS chip in their neck

Thought about this, but will have to wait for the year 2050!

The town is so small, that my staff that pop out to the bank , hospital stand out a mile away....I am in the centre of the town and can see everything....No turnstyle needed....

I was hoping if I install a system, I could prove to HO that she could link it to her payroll, thus making her job more easy....

Thanks for all the feedback .....

Used to work for them many moons ago and they were/are a preferred supplier for Spar. While the negatives listed are true, the positives for HO should make it worth your while.

Give everyone a name tag with an rfid tag and make it compulsory to wear :) then add a few scanners at the doors.

We have this system at work and it gets abused. ie the smokers take turns letting their buddies out so it looks like they were still in the office. Then the next time another one will scan out.Rinse repeat.

We got Jarrison systems stuff last year and they work quite well once set up.

In and out easy, no clock record, no pay.

But tea times and going out in the day etc requires a turnstyle and no other way for employees to leave (or booking them for clock fraud if they do leave).

I developed an access system with a card reader in Java and my brother developed a web based application to register the people that needed access.
It's currently in use at client.

I was looking for 1 of these fingerprint scanners as well but I am not sure as to what the industry standard device is.
I would appreciate it if you guys told me which device/brand is the being used at your company and where I can source it from.

You can try iPulse Systems, they manufacture biometric readers locally (Jhb) using an OEM sensor. When I still worked there their API was available to any one who was interested...

You can also try Maxicontrol manufacturing. I worked for them probably 12 years ago & they had several fingerprint & card based devices back then. They might just be a bit too pricey
