Hi,

I believe S.A.'s Caller ID standard is based on ETSI, however ETSI has a few flavours ...

ETSI DTMF
ETSI DTMF with PR
ETSI DTMF after Ring
ETSI FSK

Anyone know the definative one to use in S.A.?

Sorry I can't help but at the same time I can't help wondering why you haven't had a reply. It can't be that obscure. I am sure that if you posted an Oz flavour question like this on our Australian equivalent forum you would have two or three answers in an hour (not suggesting you do it).

Generally, I find South Africans amazingly free with giving of their knowledge on this forum (hardware, software, broadband, security, general) but with VOIP I wonder whether there is a tendency to keep infomation back. Just wondering.

Good question, no answer to that one. Still in the learning
mode, maybe Openvoice or Connection-Telecom have an
answer

Roman,
Now I am stuck. Have a look at this thread and give me an answer to the last question!

Why do you need to know?
To set up various voip/voice equipment ... for example a Sipura SPA3000 Adapter ... want to forward CID from incoming PSTN call to std analog phone on Line 1 (the SPA actually does an internal VoIP call between its 2 ports).

No holdback...

Just lack of knowledge since this has been the domain of one animal for too long.

The below is straight out of the asterisk indications.conf... Hope it helps.

; (definitions for other countries can also be found there)
; Note, though, that South Africa uses two switch types in their network - Alcatel
; switches - mainly in the Western Cape, and Siemens elsewhere.
; The former use 383+417 in dial, ringback etc. The latter use 400*33
; I've provided both, uncomment the ones you prefer

wow wtf is all this..
lol, the reason nobody comments, is because nobody comes in here, this is my first time in this forum and i have been here for over a year.
Secondly, lack of knowledge on subject.

SPA-3000 Configuration

Thanks for the ZA tone definition settings, I will try these out.

I've got a SPA-3000 but find that outbound calls to the PSTN line from Line 1 and incoming calls from the PSTN line to Line 1 experience periodic speech loss.

Any ideas on FXS and FXO port impedance settings?

Thanks

RSA is FSK Caller ID

FSK stands for Frequency Shift Keying, this is sent directly after the first ring, so you hear ring (delay) ring ring ... ring ring...

DTMF is used on most switchboards here on analogue voicemail systems, but not by telkom.

if you have ISDN, some of the TA's allow your to choose FSK or DTMF for the analogue ports, so you could use this if your system only supports DTMF.

Thanks, thats the answer I was looking for.

Just to add to that the IE's that are included from the exchange, include DATE / TIME / Calling Number (CID) and Called Number (for DID)

if you're going through an ISDN box, the Called Number IE is not included, so it's not possible to use DID through the analogue ports on a ISDN unit.

I asked Duxbury to change the firmware on one of their modems (texas intruments units) a couple of years ago to reflect the DID IE so I could use it successfully with HylaFAX (on linux) , but it only worked for Exchange analogue and Telkom doesn't like giving out DID's for those, but on hunt groups you could allocate a couple of numbers.

Have a look on Freescale's website for an in-dept how-to about the protocol used for Caller ID. Alternatively PM me your e-mail address and I will send you a copy of the document.

it's probably better just to pick up the detailled standard from ETSI, they've been giving their standards (most anyhow) at no cost... perhaps they're afraid the WWC will superceede them with new telecomms standards seeing as SIP is not ESTI's property!

look at http://www.etsi.org/services_products/freestandard/home.htm, you'll need to register.

Standard number that you need is : ETS 300-659-1.

I've been using many of these standards for my hobbies for several years (since '98 if I recall) and it's damn amazing what services are available and how little is actually used!
