Hi Guys.

Just checking to see if anyone here is doing the Coursera courses.

The Android one is already expired, but I don't care about getting a certificate, so I'm doing it anyway. The Cloud for Android one has just started.

I'm hoping to find others doing these, especially in Jhb, so that we could meet up now and again and help each other ... a study group if you will.

I first need to complete a basic java course on Udemy, which shouldn't take long for me ... then I will do these two courses concurrently.

The two courses are:
https://class.coursera.org/mobilecloud-001/auth/auth_redirector?type=login&subtype=normal (Hosted by Vanderbilt University)
https://class.coursera.org/android-001/auth/auth_redirector?type=login&subtype=normal (Hosted by University of Maryland)

And the beginner java course:
https://www.udemy.com/java-tutorial/

The plan is to get to a stage at the end of the 2 month courses where I (and anyone else who does this) can develop a basic android app which uses cloud resources such as cloud computing and cloud based databases. This then allows you to learn to create (or have them created) apps for other platforms and websites which plug into the same infrastructure without having to reinvent the wheel each time.

Hello bud, just saw this and was wondering if you ever got on with that other idea of yours? Would be interesting to see what became of the idea!

Mines taking some interesting twists and turns, looking at launching a crowd funding campaign for one specific part of it :)

As a side note, this is actually really interesting... I am going to take a look at whats involved.

I have been playing around with this in general recently and have made a bit of progress...

Would really help if you have a simple idea in your head though as i've found most of the online courses to be a bit vague and over general. Would be nice to see a lot more variety in the hello world tutorials at least!

Hey man.

Which one are you referring to? I had a few, ha ha. Sadly nothing became of any of them ... life got in the way ... just came back from 6 months in the US. But now I'm ready to try and tackle the next idea, ha ha.

Which idea is it you are referring to ... please refresh my memory :p

These courses have assignments and stuff which are graded (except for the expired course where grading is too late) ... but they get you up to a decent level from what I can see. But I am looking at the material with my idea in mind though.

I'm registered for one that starts in September.

Yeah, that's the one I'm going to be doing now concurrently with the other. I've just registered for the one earlier this year so I can go ahead and start now ... in September I'll probably be employed again with less time :(

Are you keen to start on the older one now with me so we can work together, and then when the next one in September comes, you can get ahead of the game in line to get your certificate if that's what you want?

I think it's 4 to 6 hours. But I'm planning on going faster if I can.

Awesome. Are you registering for the upcoming course in Sep, or the past course which has all the content available already?
PM me, we can work out a schedule. I'll just need about a week to get through the Android course. Ill be done with at least most of it by the end of next week.

These look interesting.

Perhaps you should form a thread/s on the course pages to find fellow S.Africans to learn with.

Although there was mention of another online Android course somewhere (with Google guys involved directly).

only for the one in september.. have you completed some of them already?

I completed the University of Maryland course. There was a Google Group formed for South Africa and a couple of get togethers in JHB. I started a couple of weeks late and was out of sync so never went to one but wish I had. I think it would really help having people to discuss the course with.

Yeah, I'm sure it would have helped too. But now things have changed for me. While I am still going to try complete the courses, I'm moving to Australia on Sep, and so no point in me trying to get a group going unfortunately. Except maybe a Web based one.

So I'm leaving to Australia on 1 September. So can't form a local group anymore from my side :(
