I got my first bill from Skumkom ****ers today after getting a new line installed last month. They included R655.71 excluding VAT for installation because I didn't want to use the thieving bastards as an ISP.

Is that normal? Or are the scum ****s just ripping me off more than usual?

Sorry to reply to my own thread but I've calmed down a touch and can't find any information on whether this is even legal? Surely it's at the very least an abuse of their position as the only installer?

Sounds about right. What I did was apply for the pre-paid package with free installation. Went in a few weeks later and changed to post paid with ADSL, didn't cost a cent.

Clever but I had no idea that this was going to happen. I'm totally shocked that they can get away with it, although it should really be expected from this disgusting monopoly.

I am also shocked to hear some people are still getting charged for ADSL installation. Weird! :wtf:

I complained on hellopeter and had someone phone me yesterday. He really didn't understand why I was pissed off and had no idea what I was trying to tell him.

Use Telkom as your ISP and installation is free. Use another ISP and you pay.

Nothing short of a scandalous abuse of a monopoly position, and really not surprising they don't understand why.

You should have spoken to the consultant.
They advise you to take a basic calling plan to get the installation free.
You cancel it a month later.

I've got a weekend talk plan. They still don't care.

OP you are right because they are thieving bastards but you are at fault for not using their stupid system to get the free line installation. :P

Gaming the system is ethical when the system is not.

Sure, but only if you know about it.

Go into a Telkom shop, explain that you opted for the self installation (unless someone came over and you went with it?). Show them you were billed an installation fee.

You'll be credited, and you'll be happy.
