Anyone tried SkypeIn Yet?

Was wondering if anyone had tried the new "SkypeIn" service yet, and what the general perceptions of it are? Use "SkypeOut" a lot to call family in the USA and think it would be nifty to have a USA number for my family to contact me on, but dont wanna waste 30 Euros if the service is known to be crap. Any opinions?

Works as well as SkypeOut. I've been using it since last weekend for both USA and UK and havent had any problems. IMO def worth the €30 for a year - plus they include 12 months voicemail in that.
 
thanks mate - will go ahead and subscribe. have also ordered the olympia phone from the accesories on skypes website. hope it works with skypein! will feedback once a have fiddled a bit... cheers -
 
How are you guys finding the quality of Skype these days. I called my uncle in Oz yesterday, and he said the quality of the call on his side was quite bad. Secondly the couple of calls I have had with a mate in London seem to be quite broken, not as clear as it used to be :( anyone else experiencing this?

Havent tried it to Auz yet but have had quite a few calls to and from UK recently and they were quite good - just as good as an overpriced Telskum's.

I've heard it reported that calls often improve after the first 30 seconds. How are you accessing the internet? Is it Skpye to skype or Skypeout/skypein?
 
Just vanilla skype to skype. And no omprovement as the call progresses. Using capped ADSL to access net.
 
Hi - havent had any quality problems yet, although i do find that for some reason latency has creeped in on Telkom's network. Me wonders if they are not routing Skype via Satellite. Did a VPN connection back to the company I work fors network, and voila, latency gone. I think Telkom may be pulling a dirty.... suprise surprise!
 
it is. going to investigate it further. i just tried to make another voice call to the US and kept on getting dropped. EEEEEEEEeerrrrrrrr :-( Connected to SAT3 via work and its fine! I wonder if Telkom have a problem on their network.... And before anyone asks, no I am nowhere near my CAP on telkomadsl and have another ISDSL unlimited account anyway!
 
i use skype all the time talkin to my uncle in austraalia.very neat and good qaulity sound.just dont let it start up wih your registry if you are a power user.i am so ram is very imporyant to me
 
its just today that i am having problems :-( I dont start it @ start up - fire it off manually. Even though i dont have to worry about RAM, i got 2GB in my notebook :-)

my 2c's worth. I use skype regularly, and from time to time, have poor call quality. from home on my ADSL (2GB capped) I've always had great call quality, but from my office (512kb leased line) it's not always that great +- 70 users on our 512kb line.
I've done a 4 way conference call including 3 continents and call quality was perfect.

I've chatted to skype users on vodacoms 3g connection, and that's not bad either.
Generally I'm quite happy.

I find though that skype out is generall too poor to use, with the exception of to the UK.

Skype's codec auto adjusts the quality of the connection based on the speed (bandwidth) available between the callers. Probebly you will find at your office you have less bandwidth available to you than at home.
Especially considering if you only had 20 users connected at work, and everyone got an equal share, then you would only get about 3.2kps (less than half of a 56k dialup, which would give you 7kps).
 
Skype and t31k0m ADSL

Something is happening with Skype and t31k0m ADSL... I tried it yesterday (512k business service) and had poor quality - occasional break-up, etc. I called the US from home on 56 k dial-up and had perfect quality, no delays.... I would say that they should advertise the ADSL service as an ADSL Browsing and Email service since they are not offering much in the other IP port / app departments....

I can compare skypes quality being in Cape Town on 3GB Telkom ADSL is a lot worse than for example while being in Austria on a Cable connection or in Germany on ADSL.

In Austria/Germany its crystal clear, no lag, perfect. In South Africa on ADSL robot voices or slurry voices (as if person is on Valium) almost on each call.

SkypeIn works equally to SkypeOut, also voicemail works with the latest skype version BETA 1.2.0.12.
 
Skype is very cool and can be used off a 64Kbit ISDN line, as it only uses ~4kbytes/sec per conversation. 64kbit/8 = 8kbytes/sec (8 bits in a byte) :)

This means that every and their granny can use this service :p

agree with you goodgirl - skype quality has been really poor lately over telkom adsl. UUNET have a congestion problem at the moment, and IS are going over satellite for ADSL customers, so it looks like a lose lose situation for all :( i have resorted to creating a VPN connection back to the office and using my internet connection from there. its a sat3/safe connection and i get crystal clear quality. unfortunately, most people dont have access to this kind of bandwidth, so it looks like we are getting screwed over again :-|
 
How do you get a leased line here, direct access to sat3/safe?
Is this through Telkom and how much does it cost, do you know?

I don't know the details, but lookup Diginet on www.Telkom.co.za, it is hellishly expensive IMO for the amount of bandwidth [read speedlessness] you get you pay in blood :(.
