any one tried the huawei b818 out?

im quite interested in this, because i saw i review on the netgear m1 vs m2. and the m2 upgraded version gave way better speedtest results than the previous version m1. that was with the same simcard and same location.

i wonder if the same could possibly apply for the b818 over the b618 as it has newer hardware ect.

The B818 is a Cat 19 router so should be able to achieve much higher speeds than the B618 which is a Cat 9 router. The real world speeds also depend on the number of available carriers that each network is using and the amount of spectrum that has been allocated to them (the 4G/5G spectrum auction is supposedly going to take place early next year).

The B818 should be able to aggregate more carriers and also both FDD and TDD carriers while the B618 is limited to fewer carriers and no mixing of FDD and TDD carriers. Unfortunately the B818 router is not currently supported by any of the MTN Fixed LTE services. It should work very well with all of the other LTE services from Vodacom, Telkom, Cell C, Rain and even the normal MTN LTE services.

Personally I would only consider purchasing secondhand units of the old technology routers like the B525, B612, B618 etc. as the B818 offers much better features at a slightly higher price. In the future the B818 should offer very good speeds once the networks have been allocated additional spectrum and more carriers become available. If you are planning to use an MTN Fixed LTE service then you may have to settle for a secondhand B618 unless there are changes to the currently authorised devices (B525, B612, B618, ZTE MF286).

I installed a B316 at a client, got speeds of 70 down and 42 up.

Although there was a huge tower 200m from them.

Not yet, but the B818 is the next router I'm buying. Tried a Mikrotik... terrible latency.

It's a tad expensive, but based on reviews it performs well.
