Gandi.net allows registration of .com domains with domain privacy. I want to register a .co.za there, and received conflicting info from them.

Do you have a .co.za with Gandi, and does it have domain privacy?

(Also, can you recommend them in general?)

There is no need for domain privacy with co.za domains given that ZACR / ZARC redacts all the info on Whois lookup

Jade: Thanks for the info, I'm no expert so appreciate the advice.

So even though Gandi is asking me for tons of personal info, if will never leak because the entity controlling the whois for SA redacts everything? So ZACR will have my info, but never publish it? Is that how it works?

If ghandi is compromised then there is a chance that your personal info will get breached and released into the wild, and the same applies to ZACR. These days with POPI and GDPR in place, services like domain privacy are a scam.

Just to add context, there is nothing wrong with Ghandi asking you for personal information as you’re establishing a relationship with them and they have the right to request that info, as do we if you signed up with us. How ever that information is not publicly available unless you specifically asked ZACR to publish it, so no need to pay for something that is already in place by law.

Ooooh! Ok now I get it. I didnt know domain privacy was a law in SA too.
Domain privacy isn’t a law, POPI dictates what information can be published online and your personal information cannot be published online.
Paying for “domain privacy” is being scammed
