I've been looking at getting smash & grab security film put on my car, and came across these guys in Midrand : http://www.titaniumtinting.co.za/

Basically, they remove your windows, polish and clean them, and then bond titanium onto the glass - which then (allegedly) provides UV protection and makes the glass stronger and harder to smash.

Has anybody used them? Is this superior to a laminate film? Price wise they're about 50% more expensive than 100 micron laminate (although on par if you price against Glasfit/PG)

Ads only bring income if you click on them, so if you not going to click on them save some bandwidth :p derailed thread... Looks interesting though. I don't see how they can bond titanium to glass in 2 hours or so though.

The lifetime warranty is also appealing - I hated seeing my windows get scratches...
Also curious as to whether the titanium gets bonded to the outside of the window - they offered to do my windscreen too, i could forget (to a degree) about stones flicking up on the highway, the titanium would bounce it away!

Bit concerned about them removing the windscreen though - could come back with leaks if they don't reseat it properly...

Hmmm I didn't quite click about the windscreen. I wouldn't mind that. Do you have some rough prices?

At the moment I have "normal" smash and grab. Think I paid R1k for it.

Few family members had 'titanium window tinting' on cars. The only advantage was it didn't scratch. The problem was it had a mirror finish even on the inside so it made looking out at night a little difficult. When the time came to tint the new cars everyone went for decent smash and grab...

I had it on my previous car. What I liked was the quality. It will never scratch, cause it they remove your windows, put it in a machine, and the titanium get bonded, i saw it myself. But, nighttime driving was horrible cause of the mirror finish, and that ugly greyish look does not match my car's red body. But it did reduce the heavy sun heat. I would not do ht again.

They quoted me R1650 for a 4 door ford figo and R1450 for a toyota yaris - i think the diff in price comes in due to 2 small fixed corner windows at the back of the ford.
Windscreens were a extra R750

Thanks guys, i guess laminate is the way to go...

Ok. So about the same price as normal smash and grab then. Can't say I'm keen on a mirror windscreen though!

If you don't like the titanium, it can be removed via reversing the process. I had it done to a vehicle back in 2003 and on one of the windows they had not done a great job, so they took the tint off the glass and went through the process again and second time round it worked 100%.
The car I had then was the appropriate metallic colour.
