Hey peoples

Just wanted to find out if anyone is using a Cisco router for home use and what are you using it for other than internet access? It's not for anything specific. Just curious to know as I just started with my CCNA studies and it is very very interesting.

Up to recently I used a little 800 Series router for my general internet connectivity at home, but this has since been absorbed into my home lab towards my Cisco studies.

As for using Cisco kit for stuff other than internet access, hells yeah! Imagine anything network related, and you'll probably be able to do it :)

I would love to get my hands on 1 of those routers just to get used to the IOS and maybe hook it up to like a server and store my movies and have everyone in my home access it. I'm really looking forward to it.:D

download gns3, play around to your hearts context
Alternatively, you can get some cheap old routers

Got a Cisco 1921 at home. Creating and managing vlan's on mikrotik sucks big time so got the cisco router to take care of that. (Inter-VAN routing happening on the cisco router now) Also got a Cisco WS2960 24 port switch.

Still using mikrotik RB750 to dial PPTP and then a RB750G for wireless, mmmm wonder if 3 routes isn't overkill lol
Want to get a Cisco AP next, the one I have (not using it) can only do 54G, looking to but a draft N one soon.

Cisco CISCO1921/K9 (revision 1.0) with 491520K/32768K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID *********
2 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
1 terminal line
1 Virtual Private Network (VPN) Module
DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.
255K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
249840K bytes of USB Flash usbflash0 (Read/Write)

Thanks I'll check gns3. I played around with Packet Tracer already and it helps a lot to understand everything better.

Seriously? I find mikrotiks far easier to manage than a cisco. While ciscos are great for min-maxing and running massive amounts of traffic which ISPs need, I believe mikrotiks are far easier and probably better suited at home.

I run all of my vpns on my mikrotik at home, and it is still by far the easiest way to manage.

See if you can find a copy of Cisco Packet Tracer.

i think it depends on the function and what you are used to.
Cisco vpn setup is probably one of the worst in the world. I can do it pretty quickly nowdays, but for someone new i dont think its the most straight forward thing. It is however quite flexible.

For normal functions, i find changes on most cisco devices very quick and easy to do.

Jip, I struggled with it lol. Maybe it was more to do with my home network layout, but main issue was I could not get the vlan's all the way to the RB751G on a virtual wireless network, running through rb750 - cisco2960 - ciscoSG200-08 - RB751G

Forgot to mention the Cisco SG200-08, a 8 port "small business" Gb switch from cisco, that one is web based only...

So I just added a cisco router

I use a Cisco 877 for my ADSL at home, I have a separate 3g mobile Wifi device (Mifi) that I use to connect to the work network directly and I've got it setup so that it broadcasts the same SSID as my home wifi network and bridge the SSID via DDWRT on my linksys home wifi router. This allows me to route a specific private range (for work applications) to the Mifi device and still keep my default route out the 877 via the ADSL, works very well. A while back I was playing around with using different ADSL ISP accounts and bundling them to get higher throughput (requires a slightly different NAT configuration setup as well as mutliple dialer interfaces)

I also have a couple of other switches/routers that I use for my home lab for study purposes (most are secondhand that I got from the US) - a heck of alot cheaper than trying to source it here in SA. Here's a list for my home lab (use dynamips/gns for the higher end routers, but gns doesn't support all functions for switching, so it's better to have the real thing to practice switching technologies):
3550-12T
2x 3750 (48-port POE) with stack cables
1841 router
some old 2500 routers and one or two 877s (with blown ADSL ports)

May I ask that you post some of your working configs -- interested to see how you set up the bundling

I am also on the lookout for some 2500's -- need one more 2501 -- but looking for the older model that had an extra 2MB DRAM soldered on the MB ( also looking for DRAM and FLASH )
Always dreamed about a 2514 ( dual ethernet ) :D ( so ancient now )
