I have GPRS connectivity via my old Nokia 5100. Great GPRS connectivity, otherwise a terrible phone, but I like the fact that I can bounce it and splash beer on it and it doesn't break. I am due for an upgrade and am seriouly thinking of getting a 5140i for the above reasons. Anyone have any experience with GPRS/Edge on this phone, and the phone in general? Please help.

I can tell you the cons of the phone, which should make you’re decision easier.

The edge on the phone is class 6 not 10.

If you use an IrDA connection you will slow down the connection since even class 6 edge is faster that the 115200kb/s that the phone’s IrDA is capable of.

And if you use the cable you will need a serial interface cable which is not nice since almost all the new Nokia phones uses the DKU-2 usb cable. The DKU-5 plugs into a usb port but is just a USB-to-Serial converter.

Thanks MTNuser. I get that about the IrDA connection, but what is the problem with a serial interface cable? What do other phones use?

There is nothing wrong with the cable and the speed. But you must spend quite a lot of money for a cable that most probably will not be used much in newer Nokia phones.

New Nokia camera phones (symbian) uses the DKU-2 cable and is part of the sales package.

Thanks again and thanks for the really quick reply. I already have a cable which I have been using on my old Nokia 5100. I have now worked out how to connect this old phone via infrared (which I had no idea I could do, I looked into it after reading your reply and then posting a thread on it). The speeds seem pretty good for my purposes, and I am actually wondering why I wasted the R300 on a cable. I am also wondering why nobody at the MTNSP outlet shops has any idea what they are talking about; they were absolutely no help when I asked how I could connect my laptop to the Internet. A couple of sessions on this forum and I know much more than all of them put together.

Anyway I really appreciate the help I have had on this forum and I just wish I had found out about it two years ago.
