Hi

So I have an iPhone. It has a built in e-sim and a single physical sim slot.

I have a MTN Business contract, trying to get MTN to work my number from the e-sim and then opening up the sim slot for another.

Thing is MTN has no idea, the shops nor the customer care can advise me on anything. Sending from this department to the next about it.

So I just wanted to know if others are doing this and how has it been done.

I also want to do this. I looked into it, MTN does it with a prepaid sim moved onto e-sim on the phone.
Vodacom only has it on contract for smarthphones. Telkom on prepaid as well.
I want to use MTN and Vodacom to get the best of both worlds.

I've only successfully used esim on cell c prepaid on my s20 plus a year ago

Vodacom only has eSim on some watches, not phones.

For a quick how to :

Walk into store
Ask for eSim -> expect confusion
Tell them you'll help them. Ask them to authenticate you. Go to the number you want to use. Sim swap. Option for eSim is there.
Select a reason for the eSim.
Click generate.

Wait 24 hours. If nothing appears, prod the MTNza team or call the MTN Activation department

Can't help you, I'm sorry to say. I'm using an eSIM in my phone, but it's a US carrier. The physical slot has a Telkom SIM.
They are all GSMA spec. Perhaps the "bootloader" wants to connect to a US Carrier?

Edit: Or the LPA alows a choice of US carriers only? In that case you may have to change your ROM.

I have an esim in my samsung watch(vodacome one number). No idea how to change it though, like if i were to sell the watch

I ported my contract to esim with MTN. They just need to do a physical sim swop and select esim. I’m running my work sim on Vodacom in the sim slot.

Looks like you got it right, I think I need to pester them a bit more to get it done for me.

I think their "we dont know what we're doing" is actually a ruse. They don't want us opening up a free sim card slot because it could impact roaming. They want you to pay full roaming fees. Its also why they've taken longer to launch Wi-Fi calling than it costs to setup a new mobile network.

Hehe. Apols if I was unclear... my regret above was that I can't advise the OP on how to obtain and install an SA-carrier eSIM.

The US eSIM in my phone works exactly as it should. I have a US phone number (eSIM) and an SA number (physical SIM). No need to change or set anything when I'm in the USA next week.

Have a cool evening.

You ought to be able to download profiles from multiple US carriers onto the singular eSIM, and be able to choose between them. The technology supports it, and it all depends on who your cellphone manufacturer has chosen as its eSIM partner, and how the eSIM has been implemented by the manufacturer.

If you're looking for something Wi-Fi dependent, I'd recommend Numero e-sim.
