Are you connected to wifi?

Yes, I'm connected to wifi

That might be the problem. Disconnect from the wifi and try again. I activated my SOs this weekend. It didnt activate for hours until I disconnected from wifi, then it verified after about 2 min. I think it might need to connect to mobile network to activate.

So I tried it and it didn't work..

I deleted the app and reinstalled and at first, the chat option wasn't showing because as you said to use the network. Then I activated the wifi and an option came to upgrade to all the features so I did that and checked the chat setting and its still verifying..

Are you getting the OTP from google? I just deactivated mine and reactivated it within a minute

I see that I get an OTP through truecaller but it doesnt show up on the google messaging app. It activated a few seconds after the OTP came though

No OTP from Google..

So I'm thinking back and not sure if its related but I installed it many moons ago on my previous phone and stopped using it like within a few days as the chat features were not available in SA and deleted the app.

Did a bit of research through google and found an option to delete chat on previous devices, so I did that and then I received an otp. When I inserted that otp, it said it couldn't honor the request due to some reason for the phone and carrier.

I tried again to give you the exact reasoning but it said I must try later

I am using it. Have been for a while. My friend in the UK cant get his Telegram to work, but his RCS is enabled on his phone there so use that to chat to him. Are you on Vodacom? Vodacom has their own implementation of RCS so if you are on Vodacom, it will use Vodacom's RCS, not Google's. Mine took ages to get working. Was constantly stuck on verifying and eventually it would say maximum number of tries reached for the day. Then one day it just said "Connected"

So you effectively using it like "whatsapp" with your friend in the UK?

How do you find out about Vodacoms rcs & possibly change it? Was reading online about "carrier restrictions", so this is effectively a wait for our networks basically.

Do we have "carrier" cache in Sa & where can I find it to clear it?

I am not sure hey. All I can tell you is RCS in my case was like love. The moment you give up and stop trying...then it starts working. Lol

lol good one @Ockie

So with messing around with all the possibilities, at some point last night it seemed to be verified. Thanks for the help, appreciated

Question about this app:
- How do we determine who from your contact list is actually using the app, so can utilize the chat function? Maybe I missed it but with other chat app's it shows the users and the rest to invite.
- Mixed articles on if this app is E2EE? Is it?

Thanks

The messages will just go through and appear like normal SMS's minus the rich content. I have it enabled, but have nobody to talk to since my wife and kids aren't interested in using it

If you start typing a message. The send icon will show SMS if it's a normal SMS. If its RCS message it stays as a normal arrow.

I haven't found any other indicator. It's a bit of a pain. But with all the free SMSs I get it doesnt really matter. The message goes through regardless

Yeah with TM, I buy the FreeMe bundles and get 100 SMS's every time I buy so I end up with like 297 SMS's that I end up losing anyway
