Hi,

does it also compress data like the opera mini version??

any benefits over IE ?

thanks

Opera is great. Very fast and efficient. Love the tabs and speed dial.

Only the odd page it has problems with (grrr FNB), then I resort to FF.

One feature I value is the real time spell-check, invaluable on these forums [-]an[/-] and similar.

Edit : Just for you, KhoisanX ;)

I just installed it now to try and its DAMN fast ! looks good as well, I may just make it my default browser :), but what I really want to know is if it compresses data like Opera mini ?

Oh wih Opera browser I can finally sync my PC bookmarks with my phones Opera mini bookmarks.

I use Opera a lot, just be careful with using Turbo, it can use lots of bandwidth by downloading links in the background so that if you click on them they open faster

ahh, thats just the sort of info I need ( quickly turns 'turbo' off ) :)

images seems a little fuzzy, I cannot find a setting to make image quality higher.

Hi Veroland

Opera does not use "pre-fetch" in Turbo mode. Pre-fetch is what you described above. Firefox makes use of this to speed up browsing.

What Opera does is different....

Turbo mode uses Opera proxy servers that compress the data and images before serving them to you... thus reducing the data load for you.

Opera mini uses a similar approach.

So Turbo does not use more data... it is quite safe to enable... the only drawback is image quality and web-layout may suffer, as well as some interactive pre-loading java etc.

For FNB I log in, wait for the sms, then click "login problems" and it goes through fine. I think clicking some of the other links under the log in box works too.
I usually set under my "site preferences" to identify as firefox/ie or something. (right click on page, edit site preferences, network tab)

Kilobitsperyear is correct above: it is important not to confuse Opera's Turbo compression feature with the 'prefetch' technique used elsewhere. One important distinction is that prefetch will use up more of your precious bandwidth allocation, while Turbo uses less.

As I understand it, Turbo compresses content much as WinZip might, so the quality at the user end could be slightly compromised. But that means you download less data (therefore cheaper), and faster. If you really want better quality for specific pages, just turn off Turbo with one click on the Status Bar.

In any case for bandwidth-conscious surfers, Opera has always had a toolbar button you can specify which will turn off images entirely at one click when browsing, or will only use already-cached images. This too is a huge saver.

In practice, with my slow (EDGE) connection, the difference using Turbo is quite remarkable, and I'm definitely a convert. The extra time your signal takes to go via the Opera Turbo server is more than compensated by the overall download speed (and size).

After loading Windows 7, Opera is now my primary browser, loving it so far.

Still use Firefox for online banking though ;)

It's fine on Standard, but for FNB you have to resort to FF.
