Good afternoon

So 2018 started on a high note I got promotion I'm not appointed yet for the position, I'm still busy with training I think next week I will be appointed and sign the contract.

Boom this afternoon we are informed VSP/retrenchment, is looming and the position, I am going to be appointed for is included in the retrenchment job list.

I just want is it possible that I can be appointed then month end I'm retrenched month end. I have been working for this company for, 7/1 years and the are people who came after me. The are already in that position but basically I'm going to be the last one. If the use last in first out I don't know if the years will work in my favour or what?.

7 years
or
1 year?

Sounds like they had a plan when they promoted you.

Your retrenchment offer will have an element that is calculated based on your years of service.

Care to share what business you are in.

Our company is going through a similar process. I'm waiting for my vsp offer so I can leave.

I have been working for the company for seven years and couple of months. I doubt it they had a plan it's just one of those things. The current position I'm holding not going to be affected . I will just seat back and watch how things unfold, the position I'm going to been prompted to the package is really good.

Dirty move from their side. I know it is easy for me to say, but I would not like to work for a company allowing such behaviour. I'd say starting to look for a new job and take the severance pay.

"Employers must pay severance pay to retrenched workers. The pay must be equal to at least 1 week's pay for each completed year of continuous service. ... Workers are not entitled to severance pay if they unreasonably refuse other employment with the same employer or with another employer" from the Labour law.

Unfortunately the last in first out is a tricky one and up to their discretion but since you have not signed contract yet they have no footing to stand on.

Disclaimer: I'm not anywhere in HR just thinking critically.

Let me correct this the HR has not said anything to me or others. Just saw the list and the position I'm going to be promoted to is on the job list. So I'm just assuming if they use last one in first one out, they talking about me. Don't know if my years in the company and good record will work in my favour.

Speak to your own people not the internet.

Simply make it known that you don't want to move to a position that is on the chopping block and would then rather stay where you are.

That should facilitate getting some guarantees in place.

Ya nee I will just wait and see if I say that I want to, keep my current position. I'm screwed don't thinking I will ever get a promotion. I will just wait for HR to call me tell me, if we holding things, or if he will go ahead and appoint me. That is when I can ask more questions and take it from there.

My question was can you be appointed to a new position then two months down the line retrenched.

Yeah, decline the offer and state your concern. It's almost looking like a plan to get rid of you.

Also, change your username. It's pretty easy to see who you're working for...
