Doing this via the CSIR seems like it could be a good idea as they have some interesting fields in information security and pattern recognition. The problem is I know nothing of what it's like to do a studentship through the CSIR.
Reading glassdoor it seems like the most common complaint is very long working hours.
Is there anyone on here who has gone this route who would care to weigh in, here or via PM? I'd even go so far as buying you a lunch so that I can pick your brain
