  • New unified photo library for both iPhoto (v 9.3 or later) and Aperture; no import/export required; Faces, Places, slideshows, albums and web sharing work across both applications
  • Support for AVCHD video has been added
  • Aperture now lets you use camera-generated previews for faster browsing of RAW files immediately after import
  • Highlights & Shadows tool has been updated to deliver higher-quality results and work with extended range data
  • A new Auto Enhance button has been added to the Adjustments panel
  • White Balance tool now includes Skin Tone and Natural Gray modes to simplify color balance
  • Auto button has been added to the White Balance tool for one-click color balancing
  • Set Desktop command has been added to Share menu so you can set a desktop background from within Aperture
  • A new Manual option allows you to drag and drop projects to customize sort order in the Projects view
  • New preference allows you to set the background brightness of the full screen browser
  • Facebook, Flickr, and MobileMe albums are now displayed as thumbnails in the main window when accounts are selected in the source list
  • Minor terminology changes, including "Original" instead of "Master" and "Info" instead of "Metadata"
  • Source list includes a new "Recent" section, showing Last Import and recently-viewed projects
  • Raw Fine Tuning is no longer displayed in the Adjustments panel by default
  • Faces can now be named by dragging them from the Unnamed Faces browser to existing snapshots on the corkboard
  • The Faces corkboard now includes a menu that allows you to set the order of face snapshots
  • Newly designed monochrome source list and toolbar icons
  • Addresses numerous issues related to overall performance and stability

Looks good so far - I just hope this fairly substantial update doesnt put Aperture 4 on the back burner.

Looked fantastic on that Retina display at WWDC.

I need to get the new mac book pro! I just love the floating control boxes that Apertures uses. Lightrooms interface feels way to cumbersome sometimes, especially since you can never use the entire screen for viewing the photo as there is always a border wasting space somewhere.

Secondary display FTW

Unified library between Aperture and iPhoto: yay!

Highlights & Shadows tool has been updated to deliver higher-quality results and work with extended range data: double yay! This was definitely a point where Lightroom was superior.

Speaking of Highlights and Shadows there's a new, third, slider.

EDIT: I'm having some problems with some of my plugins and since they've apparently eliminated 32bit mode I'm going to have to do something about my old version of Dfine.

Wow - this new version is fast particularly when it comes to previewing and selecting images during import. I read somewhere that in that regard it was faster than PhotoMechanic.

The one thing I've noticed that's bugging me is that the Inspector doesn't display the lens information correctly. It seems to be more to do with how the metadata is parsed at the time of import. For example, this was imported with Aperture 3.3:

aperture_inspector_02.png

This is the same camera and same lens, but imported with the earlier version, what ever that was:

aperture_inspector_01.png

Not having that problem myself but I did have an issue with the color adjustment - trashing the preferences solved that and maybe it will help with your problem?

Yep, that did it. Nuked the MetadataSets.plist file, selected a bunch of photos and did Metadata --> Update From Original.

Be sure to back up your command sets before you update - I lost all my custom keyboard shortcuts - luckily I found a set that I had exported to another computer.

Too late! I haven't set up any anyway. In fact, the only change I've made to the configuration is setting the preview size to unlimited, and enabled auto stacking of new versions. And some interface layout things but all in all that takes me about 30 seconds to re-do.
