I have had such a good response on this forum that I must pose the next question.
Aperture, is this a serious photo editor?

I have upgraded to iLife'11 and I am quite impressed by iPhoto, with the latest update run. The software is great for someone who just wants to quickly edit their photos, but falls short of being a serious editor.
Will Aperture be able to compete with Adobe Photoshop Elements 9?

Please guys, I cant afford Photoshop CS.

Thanks

Since aperture 3 came out I've been using PS far less than I used to. They've added some really nice tools to get most jobs done.

Why not download the 30 day trial and kick the tyres. :)

That's a great idea bwana. I will do just that today and see if I can figure it out.

If you have any questions post em, there are plenty of us that have been using aperture for years, me included. :)

Aperture is not so much a photo editor. It's a raw processor and organiser. It does have, what you might call, a few editing tools that a relevant to photographers, but don't expect to clone in an extra arm if you're preparing shots for people magazine :)

Unlike bwana, I don't use Photoshop at all - Aperture 3 does everything I want.

Bummer! I tried to download this morning and I got to about 600 MB and a fault popped up and the download stopped. So unless I can get the file on a disk somewhere that's it .(600MB X 0.19 = R114 wasted)
If anyone close to Boksburg can help me with the 3.1 Trial file I will be grateful. I have the activation code that was sent to me.

If you dont come right over the weekend I'll drop a copy in the post for you.

If you have a friend with local only ADSL then they could download it for you (or you could buy a gb). All of Apples downloads are akamised so they work on local only accounts.

Unless I really need to abuse some pixels I keep away from PS, and Aperture plugins. Those 16bit TIF/PSD files take up some serious hdd space!

There is three options:

1. Aperture - Good software, good use of smart folders and great organiser. Some pro photographers love it. Minor editing capability
2. Lightroom 3 -Adobe's option for photographer for editing RAW and editing. The RAW converter is greatly approved from previous versions
3. Photosshop / Photoshop Elements - The grand daddy of editing. A bit expensive, uses the same RAW engine as Lightroom 3. (version 6.x)

I lean to the Lightroom 3 as it is a good overall product for the amateur photographer

I've started writing something similar, but never used it because as my PP skills improve, a lot of my "non-selects" are gradually getting promoted to "selects"... :o
When I'm done with a project I export it to external drives as new libraries. Then I convert everything from the original project to full size (IQ10)* jpgs using the script which is good enough for most things. I've just finished running the script on a 30gb project and it knocked it down to 8gb.

*In future I might reduce everything to 10mp images.
