Well...Harmony OS has a big market in China. Not sure if that qualifies as seccessful? This OS will support Google Play Store (if you so choose) unlike Harmony. Will be interesting to see which OEM's signs up.

Normal plebs require a security hardened phone OS?

Takes a few minutes to install graphene OS on a pixel. And there is no need to root the phone. Rooting your phone just opens up more security holes defeating the point of installing it in the first place.
