I would agree with you whole heatedly and wouldn't doubt your expertise at all. That being said, it just seems only logical that if he has some type of hardware, he has a way to interact with it too; most especially if that's what it needs to do

Thanks for that, let me try provide a bit more info.

I'm needing an app for iOS and android, that would need a content management system webside for push notifications. It is going to interface with some proprietry hardware, which i'd prefer to discus outside of a public forum.


It's a really simple 1page type app that just needs to communicate with a CMS to determine what to display on the app. Perhaps a web app/hybrid app is possible?

I don't quite understand the bold part. Wouldn't you want an API instead of a CMS?

Also, I don't get how the structure works. Will the CMS/API interface with some proprietary hardware or will the app be doing that?

You do know in order to get data from hardware, you would need to write the software to integrate right? Meh. Hardware doesnt magically just plug in.

Wouldn't it not be "that difficult" if the proprietary hardware provides some type of communication interface? This will of course depend on what the hardware specifically does and its current communication methods.

To add slightly more insight into this now heated discussion, there is already an api built for the hardware, and i've already found someone who's keen to build it.

Well, my statements are based in the case that he has already gone through the process of "write the software to integrate".

I could only assume that is he has created some type of proprietary hardware, he has a way to do that type of thing? Fair assumption?

Yeah, but what the client has told you is string, is actually armour cable - it needs to conduct electricity, provide grounding and be well insulated and protected. Considerably more expensive per meter. You just don't know that yet. Hence the requirements discussions

Or it could be a plain old piece of string. Experience tells me that client's don't have complicated requirements from their pov.
