Sorry if this has been asked before, but...

If I purchase a 3G Apple iPhone as a cash deal from a local vendor - incredible connection etc, will this phone work on an MTN network without any hacking etc ? Can I simply slide an MTN sim inside and it will work ?

I know in the USA the iPhone is network locked onto the ATT network.

I also know it is illegal in France to network lock ANY cellphone, so the iPhone sold in France is 'open'

I believe....but am not sure, that it is also illegal for any vendor to sell network locked phones in South Africa ? If this is true, then any iPhone sold in SA should work on any carrier ?

Thanks
John

Hi,

I would recommend you search the forums for info

Try iphone tips tricks apps thread or the iphone 3g thread

It will work flawlessly on the MTN network. I have hotswapped MTN and Vodacom cards and it has worked without question.

The closest you will have to come to hacking it is changing the APN so it works with MTN.

PS the fact that you can swap simcards without turning off the phone is awesome, especially for recharging prepaid data cards.

Won't happen, in all honesty I would suggest you have a look at the Omnia (Samsung)

But if your really set on an Apple instead of a Samsung, you will need to go check at a Vodacom outlet. Note that they are not networklocked so you can get one and use your MTN sim no problem ;)
