After initially denying it, Apple has acknowledged the iPhone 5's purple flare camera problem in an email to a Gizmodo reader.

Their solution: "Angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures."
Here's their complete answer:

Dear Matt,

Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures. The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera. If you wish to reach me regarding this case number *********, please contact me at 1-877-***-**** ext. *******. I currently work Thursday-Monday: 7:00am - 3:30pm Mountain Time. If you reach my voicemail, please leave your name, phone number, case number and the best time to reach you. Email is ***********@apple.com.

Long time Gizmodo reader Matt Van Gastel received this email after a long call with Apple support regarding the Purple Flare problem in his phone, which apparently is a feature common to every iPhone 5:


Initially I was told that it shouldn't happen and that it is strange. My call was escalated to a senior support individual who again said it was odd and shouldn't happen. I sent her some pics of the issue and she in turn sent them to the engineering team.

Her final response is what you can see at the top of this article. Some photography experts have speculated that the purple flare is a product of the sapphire glass covering the iPhone 5's camera.

So it is final, folks: Apple says that, if your photos have a purple flare, this is totally normal behavior of the iPhone 5's camera. You are just holding it wrong.

Also, it's not Apple's fault that the Sun is purple.

Some believe it's the sapphire glass covering the camera lens that's causing the problem, but if you look at the comparison images put together by Mashable's Charlie White, things become a bit murky. Indeed in one image, the iPhone 5s camera is much more affected by the purple halo than the iPhone 4S. In comparison image, the iPhone 4S actually suffers more of a purple effect than an iPhone 5. And then in a third comparison shot, in which both images are exposed to direct sunlight, the effect doesnt pop up at all. So who knows.

Everyone knows that Apple, unlike every other electronics company in the world ever, never makes mistakes. Their superiour emotional experience, karma-balance-units and moonbeam transmogrifiers ensure 100% perfect hardware every single time and make them worth the huge price premium over other puny devices that only provide useless things like "more power" "more functionality", "multi-tasking", "flexibility", "compatibility" "better looks" "removable batteries", "no vendor lock-in" or other such made-up marketing terms that no-one cares about in a phone anyways.

These are clearly more foul LIEZ perpetrated by jealous fanbois who are tired of basking in Apple's awesome glow and trying to stop the spreading of Their Glorious Message.

I mean, If Apple says you're to stupid to use their camera properly, they're right, not some dude on the internet. I mean, who are you going to believe? The OMG HUEGEST COMPANY IN THE UNIVERSE, or 1 guy with "evidence", "side by side comparisons" and other such clearly biased, fanboy junk? Plus, he didn't even use the camera for its intended purpose :mad: There's not one pic of food or himself in the mirror on there. BLASPHEMY!!!!



Sheesh, even pretending to be this loopy takes a lot of effort. I can't imagine what it's like full time.

Edit: In the non-brainwashed, non-bat**** world though, that's just plain old purple fringing, happens on many cheaper digital cameras. Yes, even ones without sapphire glass. You don't need a "photography expert" to tell you that.

After "extensive research" they will most probably conclude that it is the spirit of Steve Jobs himself.

This, of course, is a feature that is specific to only the iPhone 5 and hence, it is a one up on all the other phone brands. I mean cummon... Panorama, smile detection, effects and all that other crap is useless because now you and only YOU(and every other iPhone 5 user), will have Stevie in their pictures.

Future updates include "ghost Steve" integration with the mapping system so that you will always have a companion with you when you are lost.
 
Customer : I held it in my hands!
Apple : WRONG! you should have purchased the iGrip and held it with that !
