Barely 4 days after the launch of the Apple App store, geared to provide iPhone users on-phone application download functionality and the hair is literally flying amongst developers vying for top of the list visibility on what is bound to be one of the most successful software vending platforms known to man.
All the fuss is about some application vendors exploiting conventional directory listing standards to get their applications listed first by putting spaces before their filename/descriptors.
It is a simple yet very effective way to get to the top in an alphabetical listing system open to exploitation by those who spotted the “error”. Apple will have to sort it out in the name of fairness but the folks doing the filename cheating say they did it in the spirit and style of Apple guru Steve Wozniak who openly “cut the line” at a iPhone 3G launch event at a store in San Jose in the USA.
They effectively pulled a Wozniak.
