Apple Cinema Display

Some older Dell and Apple Cinema Displays used exactly the same LG-Philips panel inside. Wonder whether this is still the case? If so, there is no reason, other than the design, to pay a premium for the Apple.

That's like saying there's no reason to buy Samsung LCD TV because Sinotech and Logik uses the same Samsung panels. There's more to a screen and its picture quality than just the panel, isn't there?

Yes you are correct.

Somewhere out there on the internets is a list being maintained by people anal about their lcd panels. The lists contains the lcd brand/model and the panel make/model & specifications it contains.

Unfortunately I don't remember where this list was kept.

I imagine there are other features around the panel, like for example, the number and variety of inputs the monitor has, or if it has a USB hub, or even things like automatic scaling of lower resolutions, and that might well differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The Dell 3008WFP certainly trumps the Apple in terms of inputs and compatibility (VGA, DVI, DP, HDMI, Composite, SVHS, etc vs DP only).

Agreed, but what about picture quality? Identical?

Won't make a difference if you do not have a color calibration tool (like a spyder or monkey)

The electronics used can & does make a difference to picture quality as has been shown in reviews before where they compared different brands using the exact same panel nut it's bot as great as the difference between different panels.

Apparently there can be some variation. This review from a few years back compares the Dell and Apple displays of the time, which were alleged to be using the same underlying panels, but gave the edge to the Apple display.
