Apple Homeview

I’m interested but all depends on how nicely it plays with Matter or they still allow Home Assistant to plug into it happily.

It’s also about damn time HomeKit supports energy attributes so you can see your home solar stuff and general electricity use.

The accessories by third parties are outrageous though, including the wall mounts. How does a simple lock cost more than then entire HomeView product and all it does is locks?

So, as of today, Apple has documented support for CarPlay audio and video apps and small widgets. I suspect Siri AI will provide another route, too. That limited app model may disappoint some, but I think it points to where personal assistants are heading. Apps aren’t going away, but the need for a separate app on every device is.

Siri, with apps integrated through App Intents, is emerging as a new UI. Developers who have adopted that technology already give users ways to interact with their apps beyond the apps themselves. I expect HomeView will extend that opportunity even further without requiring developers to build for an entirely new device. If it does, that’s a win for developers and users alike, and perhaps just the tip of the iceberg in a world where computing extends beyond apps.

WTF is even going on here if the first party stuff isn’t ported fully and running on CarPlay.

Apple is taking the piss. And it will all be sorted in a year from now with the first major update but it’s a shocking release like this.

Apple preparing for the future.

Apple is already working on a larger and better HomeView

Last week, Apple launched the HomeView, its first smart home screen thing, which is affixed to a speaker and rather obviously meant to compete with Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub. The HomeView is basically Apple realizing it needs to be in this space and not cede it to its competitors without a fight.

But it's not a perfect product. It seems to be designed to be appealing only to people who have all of the other Apple products, and somehow didn't buy any smart home devices from other ecosystems. That niche probably does exist and may be larger than you'd expect, but the HomeView has some rather obvious shortcomings, including the fact that its screen doesn't swivel. According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple seems very aware of that and is already working on an improved version.

This HomeView might launch as the HomeView Ultra or Max or 360 and will have a larger 9-inch screen affixed to a robotic arm, hence solving the lack of swivel of the current HomeView. Interestingly, Gurman says the HomeView is a pretty old product, which was literally sitting in warehouses for "the better part of a year", just "waiting for the software to catch up".
