There is no doubt that Apple's new Intel-based iMacs are works of art. There is simply nothing comparable in the world of Windows-based PCs from a design point of view.
The iMac's screen is its most impressive feature. It houses the entire computer - there is no separate case housing the motherboard, hard drive and processor. The bright, crisp, 24-inch screen (resolution: 1 920 x 1 200 pixels) is a pleasure to work on, even when there's bright light streaming in from outside. The display area is big enough to allow two applications to run next to each other on-screen.
Because the new iMacs have Intel processors, they can also run Windows using Apple software called Boot Camp. The machine comes with a high-end ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card - great for gaming and video editing.
But it ships with 1 GB of memory, which, I quickly discovered, is not sufficient for anything beyond basic tasks. But it's quick and easy to install new memory - there's a slot at the base of the screen. The only big problem I've had so far is its cheap and nasty keyboard, which gives me mild electric shocks whenever I touch the edge of it.
