Why does Apple use a reseller system in SA? Why can't they just open up a couple Apple Stores here instead!? I know it's not that simple but it's not like Apple don't have the resources.

Apple has a market cap greater than SA's GDP.

How many more devices would they really sell if they had an actual presence here. Not much is my guess, why bother.

It has been mentioned before (can't find the link), but basically Apple only opens up their own stores (Apple Stores) once a market is big / mature enough. Up to then, they use resellers and give them permission to open up iStores.

Yeah, South Africa is far too small for them to bother with, if they sell 500 machines a month it would be a lot. Its also not like we are selling thousands of iPhones either...

but if means not dealing with The Core Group, who can put a price on that ? Infinetly better.

@Pooky. The market opportunities for a brand like Apple in SA are vast. One cannot compare the results obtained by the Core Group to the the brand strength that Apple as a company would command in the RSA. I don't know if you have ever been in an Apple Store or not, but the experience is mind blowing. The way they operate and their efficiency is something to be experienced. The vibe they create on the retail floor is truly something else.
But in real terms our market is still very small and not a priority for Apple at present. But who knows what plans Apple may have for the future here.

I haven't been in a proper Apple store, only in our iStore.

Maybe if Apple came here to see that Core is crap they would change their minds.

Probably the same reason why apple doesn't let anyone release any old app on the app store. Its a control thing.

Personally I think it maintains the integrity of the brand. If any old reseller was able to get Apples products, you can sure some will really bugger it up, more so than core already do :p

Apple are all about control.

Apple will not sell me e-books because it is sooooo complicated. Amazon will sell me the same e-books quite happily - they land on the Kindle app within seconds. Don't make excuses for Apple. If they really wanted to, they could do it. They could make a deal with Rhythm Records so we could at least get local music on iTunes, for example.

They don't want to. We're too small to bother with. That's all there is to it.

Pooky, you can't even start to compare an Apple Store with an iStore, there is just no comparison.
The buzz in an Apple Store really creates a "Buy me now" vibe, and most of the shoppers do just that. The personalized service aspect adds real value to the products and create a feeling of consumer confidence in their products.
Fortunately I will be experiencing that feeling again when I go to Aussie again in October for a few weeks. I just hope the new iPad and iPhone is released by then. (and I used to be a Windows fanboy!)

Apple Market Cap $330.45 Bn
SA GDP $280 Bn

Apple wins

Apple's market cap is as a result of the sum of their markets. They will operate in any country that is judged profitable. Look at some of the countries they operate in, in Europe. I think the point missed is the level of sofistication in the available market. But while they are on their high, we can only wish.
