After months of rife speculation on the W3 D-Day for the Apple device of probably the year has made its debut. The iPad was revealed today by Steve Jobs and looks to be the perfect war hammer to do some serious damage to the Amazon Kindle to name but just one example of its power in my opinion.
The device runs on the iPhone operating system, has got no keyboard and is 100% touch enabled and dependent. In essence you have a device with a 9.7 inch LED backlit display that is orientation aware and flips the working space the right way up no matter whether you turn it landscape or otherwise. It is brilliant but not exactly new. What it does seem to do brilliantly though is take all the recent advances in computer interaction technology and combine them into one slim and very sexy device.
Screen resolution is 1024×768, so not FULL HD but it is more than enough considering the use of the device. It will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options. Not quite enough space for many video libraries nowadays but more than enough for the folks who will put legal stuff on there, which is what Steve Jobs and company want you to do because they will be making money off of the content they will be selling to you.
It is Wi-Fi capable up to the new “n” standard (it does b & g too) and also sports Bluetooth capability. It is also capable of interacting with mobile networks using 3G 7.2 Mbps HSDPA. In other words, it is fast! The battery is ready for 10 hours of use and 1 month of standby time according to the facts and it is very light. It comes in at 0.68 kg.
Here is a short video clip of Steve Jobs explaining the iPad and just a few of the things it can do.
It will cost you around R3737 if you buy it in the USA but expect it to cost you much more on the local front when the official distributor (Core Group) brings it into South Africa.
