Apple iPhone 17 thread

I'm beyond gatvol of waiting, first I was waiting for Vodacom for over a month, now it's their courier partner Skynet.

This is the third day in a row now, the parcel is out for delivery, the driver calls around 10:00 to confirm my address and whether I'm available, then I hear nothing from them for the rest of the day, only for the tracking to update somewhere after 19:00 in the evening that the customer wasn't available.
The driver is unreachable on the number they call me from and the call centre is not willing to give me the driver's contact details.

Is it still the same now that it is Friday?
They have truly given you the runaround.

Yes no delivery yet, I even escalated it to Vodacom again and both parties promised I would get delivery yesterday.

Sounds like my experience with Telkom. They got stock of the 17 Pro; then said listen we can’t deliver; go to this store. Store doesn’t have stock fobs me off to Incredible. Incredible has stock but their system has been on and off every time I go there and unlike Voda they won’t start the process without me being there to do final signature and verification.

Lol; almost at the point where I should just buy it cash to offset the amount of time I’ve spent waiting for an upgrade phone to be available

Finally!!! After my call to Skynet this morning when they said it didn't go out for delivery today and it's still in the warehouse, I contacted Vodacom again to tell them how useless their courier partner is. Whatever they did made a difference, suddenly the driver called me at 16:30 saying he is around 30 minutes away from me and I finally got my phone...

Loving it so far, obviously a massive massive upgrade from my XR, so some apps which was painful to use the last 6 months or more is actually a pleasure to use again.
Cameras is super and I don't even have the Pro.

I just charged from 33% to 81% in 25 minutes almost exactly, that's just crazy, using my 65W Dell charger. I thought fast charging would only work using a 40W Apple adaptor and cable, but it seams not so.
It gets quite hot when charging that fast, but most of the time I'll just charge overnight with the wireless charger next to my bed which I think is 10W.

Congratulations!!! 🥳
Yep I think the move to USB-C is what changed it all as they added PD support (correct me if I am wrong), so any charger that complies can fast charge an iPhone too.

FYI

My Vodacom prepaid eSim didn't transfer from my old phone to the new so I had to do a Sim swap. What a backwards way to get it done in 2025, a real ball ache and to make it even worse, I couldn't find the correct updated process anywhere on the Vodacom website and 3 different consultants I talked to on 082135 gave me 3 different stories.

1. Download the Vodapay app and register with your phone number. You'll see there is a option to do a Sim swap, but only for eSim to plastic Sim.
2. Go to a Vodacom store, yes this is really the only way, WTF Vodacom?
3. You can not do a eSim to eSim swap, only eSim to plastic Sim, again WTF Vodacom? So do this for R70.
4. Wait for the signal to die on your eSim, insert the plastic Sim in to a phone and activate it.
5. Go on to the Vodapay app again, now you'll see a option to do a plastic Sim to eSim swap for R25, they will email you the QR Code and Bob's your aunty. Just wait for the signal on the physical Sim to die before you scan the QR code and activate the eSim.

Afrihost AirMobile process on the other hand running on the MTN network.
Open AirMobile app, tap, tap, tap, get new QR code, scan QR code, done in less than 2 minutes.

Got my Silver 17 Pro. Pretty annoyed as this has been the most difficult phone to actually get in hand ever.

So far, phone seems snappier than my 14 Pro but that might be because I set it up from scratch and didn't pull any backups etc except for WhatsApp.

Slightly OT, can anyone recommend a wireless charger for use with my iPhone 17?
Good quality, USB C, Magsafe compatible will be nice though not essential, 15W or so will be fine since I charge wirelessly over nightt. It doesn't seam like UGreen have something, they are my go-to when it comes to chargers and cables these days.

I have 2 cheap timo (spit) wiless charging pucks then I also have a even older wireless charger, but all of them seams to be very tempramental with the 17, placement is a mission to start with and then just a slight movement and it will stop charging, I'm not sure if it's maybe because of the specific case I have on, it's a Speck Presidio case which is Magsafe compatible.

Or maybe I should just stop wirelessly charging all together? I know they say it's actually bad for the battery because of all the additional heat generated, though I'm not sure if this is different with Magsafe where the allinement is sspot on.

We have this one: Anker. Works well and manages heat as well. Expensive though. I got mine on a nice special.

Note. I’m not in SA, so you might not find it there

Congratulations 🥳 and enjoy!
Apparently 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are all still facing delayed deliveries globally, especially for Orange and Silver when it comes to Pro and Pro Max.
Colleague went go fetch her Series 11 Watch at iStore and sure enough there was someone moaning at the staff about how long their 17 PM is taking to arrive.

I was at Menlyn Park in PTA last week and the iStore there was packed more than what I am used to seeing, I am truly shocked by the amount of interest around the 17 range.

I’m aetting up an iPhone 17 and wondering the best setting for the battery.

I charge overnight on a wireless stand and have a MagSafe case. My 15 pro is 560 cycles and was just set to 100% since day 1, I got it the day they released. So 2 years and 4 months ago and it’s at 86%. The drop in screen time has been noticeable so now I’m just wondering best way to prolong the life for a new phone from a new day 1.

So do you guys set a percentage like 80% or so, or just click on optimised charging and let the phone deal with it?
