Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Of course in the listing of drop down county codes - SA is not listed!

I did that - it takes you back to the previous page. I guess this is it:

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

If you can't check online I can't be bothered to go to the shop to check if my ipod is effected. I'll wait for it to catch fire and sue them :)

You can always use the UK drop down to check if you're affected.

But hey, if you want to risk your gnads to prove a point then knock yourself out.

Tried that too - something about we don't have that serial number on record. Maybe my device is not effected.

Interesting enough if you look under support for contact details, South Africa isn't listed in that list either.

I bought mine in the UK while living there and mine is effected - guess wont get a replacement :(

anyone find out a way to do this yet?
surely all the apple fanbois wouldn't be let down on a technicality like this?

also got mine in the uk, checked my serial number using the uk option, and it asks for a uk mailing address. i assume that means i qualify. seems like a good idea to send it to a friend there who is coming back for christmas?

Handed mine in at Digicape today. Quick process, and I should have a free new iPod nano in 2 or 3 months.

My sister bought the iPod for me in Dubai in 2006, but according to their systems it was sold in Malaysia originally... So, grey import bought in Dubai and imported into SA - recall still applies. They don't care where it was purchased.

Months!? Why so long?

Well, the official Apple process is 6 weeks. Take into account that Digicape/iStore has to wait until they have enough iPods to fill a box before they ship it back to Apple, and the time for it to ship back to SA... That's why I estimated 2-3 months.

And yup, I think they initially replaced the Nanos with refurbished first gen models, which may have run out. The Verge and Engadget reported that users are now getting the new gen model (unboxed, just wrapped in plastic, probably refurb). That's why I sent mine back... possibly scoring a free new Nano.
