Apple plans to launch low-cost MacBook

Every single low-end Mac user I've ever seen has made me feel really bad for them. Tiny 12" or 13" things that are dog slow, have nearly no storage space and clearly represent an enormous expense to the owner. Man I feel bad when I see them. The same money would buy a decent 15" Windows laptop with better specs in every respect. Especially for the folks blowing nearly R20k on a MacBook.

I just can't get on board with the entry-level Mac thing. They give me cognitive dissonance.

If it’s Retina based the 13-inch is really all that you need.

But yeah non-Retina with 128GB storage is useless to me...but then you and I aren’t them and don’t have the same needs.

20K I would have spent on an iPad Pro with all the bells instead. But I think the normal MacBook comes in right around there which isn’t a terrible machine.

****

21k for the MacBook 12-inch with 8GB and 256GB SSD.

More then enough for most people and I would probably be quite happy with it.

A 128GB Air though...not a ****.

My wife is crazy about her Macbook 12". It's an ideal size for her, 256gb storage is plenty and it's so lightweight it's hard to believe there's a laptop in there. Of course the Core M isn't very fast but she isn't using it for anything that needs processing power, so she doesn't even notice. I'm getting pretty jealous of it tbh.

It’s rare to find a MacBook convert that isn’t happy with their own machine while still fairly new. (3-5 years old).

The perception is as above from external parties with different needs who just can’t understand it.

Erm..the Air costs less than that right now.

I reckon 10-12k would be the sweet spot.

The Air is already R12k, last time I checked.

Add a Retina display and you know Apple will sell it for R14999

That's if they add a Retina display of course.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

But like I said earlier take the aluminium unibody away and it's a lot cheaper which could see the Retina come into play again at a lower price.

What does that have to do with the probability of the claim for a new macbook air?

Anyway the release of these low-cost devices could signal: they're in trouble they need more market share; they're a profit making company and want more market share.
Nothing. I was just sayin'...

Based on what? Pretty sure I asked this question before and never got an answer.

It's like saying Porsche or Lamborghini are set for a big fall in the future.
Both Porsche and Lamborghini have declared insolvency in the past. Both are now owned by VW.

Yeah because VW is the Apple in this equation.

You still haven't answered the actual question though about what your statement is based on.

If they don't, they can't compete. For the same amount of money, a Windows notebook comes with at least an HD IPS display. Often an HD IPS touchscreen. The MacBook Air is now way behind technology wise.

Speaking of which I still wish they would make a massive iPad that is iOS when mobile and OSX when docked to a keyboard and mouse.

Would be awesome.

And don't expect one from me either. I'll leave it up to you to do your own bit of research because once you have done that, things might become a bit clearer to you.

Agreed, I have the 512gb version and I’d rate it as the best laptop I’ve purchased from a usability/practicality perspective. Could do with an extra usbc port and faster processor as you said but for day to day it’s fantastic.

I love how it attracts all the anti-Apple people lol. Don't they have anything better to do with their time?

Mac sales are less than 10% of their revenues, I doubt it could collapse them.

They probably want to more market share to get more people entering the ecosystem to get iPhone and iPad afterwards.

Oh I’m very much aware of their financials.

Exactly why I asked the question about the evidence...but apparently it’s a poor attempt at trolling as nothing was forthcoming.

Nothing in their game plan indicates a near future market failure.

Even losing 50% of their sales won’t see Apple failing.
