Apple prefers to settle patent litigation

Well, Samsung can't really afford to chase Apple forever either so this would be a good thing on their side as well. Who Apple should really be watching out for is Google - they're about the only people with enough clout to really make a good go of it.

I think Apple have seen the future and that the enemies they are making today hold key patents to it. I say in 5 years apple wont be leading the race anymore (Personally, i think they started to lose the lead after the 3gs)

Other way around... Samsung makes most of the chips for Apple. So if Apple irritate Samsung enough Samsung will just be all like "LOOOL, no more chips for you!" Bye bye iPad and iPhone

Because Samsung is the only one who makes chips? I'm sure their shareholders would really enjoy losing those billions in revenue they make from Apple.

Business decisions shouldn't be based on emotion.

I have a feeling it has more to do with the recent Motorola Case.

I laugh at how Tim claims people should stop stealing then they will stop suing as they all stealing from each other. Maybe they all should get into a room sign cross patent deals and call it a day.

Oh wait the lawyers would hate that move as it will in effect make them jobless.... carry on, let the war continue.

I dont recall the source, but switching manufacturers would put Apple out of chips for a year or two (this was back in late 2010, so the situation has likely changed). Their demand is staggering, and other fabs simply wont be able to handle it. Nevermind the time it will take for them to setup the processes to actually make the chips. If Samsung cut Apple today, Apple would be in deep poo poo. Which is exactly why Apple approached TSMC

What I reckon it boils down to is how much money does Samsung make from Apple, and then how much do they lose/spend fighting Apple. If those two numbers came close enough then it would make perfect business sense to drop them.

Different departments. Will never happen ie: pipe dream

I worked for a co that has this set-up where departments dont mix and are run as separate companies just all sharing the same name and reporting to head office. Because of the commissions involved they would rather sue themselves than giving up a valued customer for the benefit of another department.

That makes no business sense at all. Let one department lose (for example) R100 to company X, while the other makes R10 from company X and then do nothing about it  Is head office retarded? Though back to reality, I'm sure the numbers are not nearly close together enough yet.

The opposite should also hold true then - if Samsung piss Apple off enough, Apple pulls out and moves to another manufacturer. If they're clever, they've already set up channels that should work. There'd be a couple hiccups, sure, but nothing catastrophic (like 2 years with no product).

This is why I say that Google is a threat because they don't have a helluva lot to lose by pursuing Apple for patent violations.

“I would highly prefer to settle than to battle, but it’s important that Apple not become the developer for the world. We need people to invent their own stuff,” he said.

ROFLMAO hahaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaa that was the funniest thing I've in a long while lol Apple invents everything.... lmao sure only isheep will believe that Tim!
The rest of us with our heads still on straight know better.
Maybe Apple should stop patenting others ideas as their own "inventions" and then sue everyone else with it and then there will be peace.

They only approached TSMC last year, think they are currently doing trials runs on the next chip. These things take time. Switching fabs for chips isnt as easy (ie quick) as switching factories for your favourite nuts and bolts. Heck, if everything goes absolutely 100% perfect, it takes 3 months for production GPU wafers as an existing client. Rushed engineering runs are generally 6 weeks. I dont know how that translates into other chips, but it gives you an idea
