"...Apple has unveiled its new Mac Pro desktop computer, a new design and form factor that could change the way users think about desktop computing.
“When we began work on the next Mac Pro, we considered every element that defines a pro computer — graphics, storage, expansion, processing power, and memory,” the company says about the product. “And we challenged ourselves to find the best, most forward-looking way possible to engineer each one of them.
“When we put it all together, the result was something entirely new. Something radically different from anything before it. Something that provides an extremely powerful argument against the status quo.”
The new PC is centred around a unified thermal core, and stands just 9,9-inches tall with a diameter of just 6,6 inches...."

so how many arms and legs is going to have to donate for this puppy.

How does this raise the "desktop bar"...

Its a Desktop PC in a different form factor. Gawd I hate marketing hyperbole.

Its been possible to build a pc with exactly the same specs for as long as the hardware has been available. All this changes is the design of the case.

It's a fairly innovative set of hardware in that thing actually. Not really just a standard PC in a new case. There is a lot of marketing hyperbole around it that's true of course, but the short story is that it looks like a compute beast.

Its perfect for filling that round space your rectangular case could never fit into

Sounds like the Compaq's from the 80's and 90's with modern hardware to me.

There isn't really any innovative compute hardware in it.. there is some innovative cooling hardware, but it doesn't raise any desktop bar, it just changes the form factor.

The OP's article isn't great:
- the Mac Pro is a workstation not a desktop
- the Mac Pro's main innovations are not in the components but in the assembly and design
- not all of the hardware specs have been confirmed yet

Where I expect the Mac Pro's hardware to really shine is if the OS and the pro apps that follow are optimised to make use of the dual GPUs.

Please build a pc with thunderbolt 2 ports, I challenge you... OEM hardware isnt any cheaper, I just ordered a much lower spec'd hp z620 for R39k.

Would be difficult for Apple to innovate with something they don't make. This is an absolute beast of a machine and the fact that they squeezed it into such an insanely small size with a brilliant cooling system. It is less than 30cm tall.

PCI cards are available for Thunderbolt 1 as are motherboards, I'm sure the future will bring Thunderbolt 2 cards and motherboards.

The point is that right now there is nothing. The Mac Pro is the only machine I know of that is capable of supporting 3 4k displays simultaneously. Its not a bad piece of kit at all.

Apple are just improving existing concepts and technologies like they are well known to do. Theyre not really innovating much but they are bringing some awesome tech to the table.
