Apple readies Retina display 15" MBP

Be a pity if they make it thinner and drop the ethernet port.

I say good riddance to the ethernet port. It is something I haven't used in many years, and is the single biggest port on a MacBook. And Apple is never shy of getting rid of old technology.
For those people that need it, a USB->Ethernet connector can easily be bought

Will it have an SSD?

What is the momentum towards Thunderbolt like these days? I'm yet to see any TB external drives in the shops yet USB3 are a plenty.

Eish! My timing sucks! Been holding out for this for ever it seems... Was planning on selling my old 13" MBP and upgrading 'cept that machine was stolen last week and insurance are replacing it with a new MBA this week... I'm out of the upgrade cycle... Damn! Double damn! :(

Thunderbolt devices are starting to appear more frequently.
SSD? Not sure. I imagine for the Pro, they would still use HDD's as SSD's wouldn't provide enough storage.
That being said, external drives are readily available (And quick thanks to Thunderbolt) and then there is iCloud. So I'm quite unsure which way they will go

I would also happy to relinquish the USB / FireWire ports, etc. for extra battery life and an extra Thunderbolt port (simple to find adapters for TB to USB, FireWire, USB3, etc.)

Don't forget goodbye DVD...

I just hope the HDD / SSD and RAM remain user upgradable.

WRT any retina display I hope they give users the choice to either get maximum desktop capacity vs retina smoothness. I personally prefer a larger work area (resolution) vs retina PPI smoothing.

Btw my comments are in reference to the MBP, like the compactness of the MBA, but not the limited screen size of 11" or 13" -- ideal is 15" for me.

Retina display on a 15" laptop would have to be in the 4k region. Does anybody seriously doubt that Apple is leading the world on the technological innovation front? Nobody has even tried to bring a >fhd laptop to the table yet (or for that matter a commercially viable 4k TELEVISION) and now Apple will (presumably) quadruple fhd in one move. It's astonishing. HP et all stand on stage waving Mac Air lookalikes screaming how they aren't copying Apple, and meanwhile Apple is just flying past all of them.

No doubt they are leading the tech innovation front. Small things like the pinch to zoom on a trackpad and the gestures just make a huge difference. Finally the laptop world is getting decent displays too.

From the article:

"Sources familiar with software strings left behind in OS X Lion 10.7.4 and Mountain Lion betas say that this Retina Display MacBook Pro features multiple Retina resolution modes, so users are able to adjust the sharpness and image sizes to their liking. Unlike Mac display settings of today, these Retina Display settings will not be marked with numbers/resolution sizes, but with descriptions such as big, small, or optimal, according to these software-based findings. The long-awaited “resolution independence” is upon us."

I would love to know how they are going to put a Retina display of that size in there, which will draw a large amount of power, keep their long lasting battery life, and make it thinner all at the same time. That will be some impressive engineering

Getting rid of all or some of the useless ports (ethernet, FireWire, USB, SDXC card) and DVD I'm sure would help (not sure they get rid of it all though at this stage, I certainly would prefer that, just need one more TB port)...

It's a MBP so I at least expect it to be heavier than the Air, also if they put a SSD in, it's not only going to fly but will be much better on the battery.

I suspect you are right. It would be fantastic engineering.
I hope you are right :)

They will obviously be benefiting from Ivy Bridge and possibly Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics, both of which should keep thermals under control. Then I imagine they'll do an iPad3 and shove a 3x battery in there to cope.

Btw here's a few example TB extender solutions supporting why I think all we need is 2xThundetbolt ports and nothing else:

Plus point for Apple is that they get to sell us their cool looking peripherals / cables. Plus points for us is a lighter, ultra thin, longer battery, brilliant display and another marvel of tech.

Or what about a real sleek, aluminum and cool looking TB based mini dock for the MBP, providing all the same ports as today when you need it.

They would simply need to take the current tech (ports) in the current Apple displays and give it to Jony Ive to dress it aluminum and blend its design with the hopefully sleek 15" MBP, and also create docks for the MBAs

Can be done easily - this has been proven by all the iPads, iPhones and android phones which all use IPS displays. IPS laptops have been available for a long time too, but have been pricey. I think the technology has just become affordable and high res thanks to the manufacturing explosion of iDevices and android devices which use IPS.

I agree there should be a Thunderbolt dock, but I'm sure someone will make one soon. Thunderbolt coming to PC's too so the future of the technology looks good.

Yes of course you're right, but I want a Jony Ive' designed one; the current ones are as ugly as crap (plastic rectangular boxes, aaah :(, vomit, vomit :whistling: vomit :p) :D

USB3? I don't think Apple is quite ready to give up on thunderbolt just yet.

IPS is great technology, but it is different to Retina.
IPS means In-Plane Switching, which effects viewing angles and color reproduction.
Retina relates to pixels per square inch and the viewing distance.
There are no laptops that do retina. The iPad is the largest device that does it

Why do we even need USB3 when TB is clearly faster and more extendable. For example:
You can get USB3 ports from an extender plugged into TB, but you can't get a TB port from one plugged into USB3 (hence USB is clearly inferior)

Overall I see less and less need for USB in my day to day activities, currently my USB use is limited to:
1. My IPad or iPhone for developing and iTunes music synch (IMO still faster than WIFI).
2. Wacom Cintiq.

All my other devices are wireless, for example: printers, computers, speakers, ...

Apple will most likely migrate the future iDevices away from USB, and so to will companies like Wacom, ... (until then we'll most probably still have 1 or more ports on its computers, unless of course if they supply a TB to 2 x USB cable, TB dock, ...

Wacom btw has already introduce WIFi in its non display tablets (Intuous); for the Cintiq I believe they'll go the way of TB as this will greatly simply the current connections (DVI & USB)

Correct Jstrike there are no Retina laptops, but there soon will be. There already reference to high resolution Macs in the latest beta OS, and Windows laptops with IPS "Retina" displays will be here soon too.

Apple is going to USB 3, it's part of the latest Intel chipset, and has had working hacking oh drivers for a while too. Nothing wrong with having both USB 3 and Thunderbolt built in right? The latest Intel desktop motherboards have USB 3 and Thunderbolt too.
